UVA's sexual assault survey/questionnaire had 25% of girls saying they'd been raped or that they'd been incapacitated and assaulted or threatened with rape (not sure what the wording was exactly) and W&M's survey had the percent of women who experienced rape/sexual assault at 4% for women. Both pre-covid so maybe data different now.

Even if the absolute numbers have changed, that's still a huge difference.

Including all types of "touching" (including groping, feeling, etc.) W&M's was 28% for women. Nationally the percent for "sexual assault" is 26%.

I hate to state the obvious but these incidents will occur on every college campus and certain behaviors will increase the likelihood. It’s up to everyone to make smart decisions and protect themselves by not putting themselves in certain situations.

Right, but schools that have assault rates significantly above average are doing something different than schools with below average rates.

There are 16,000 students there.

No.

My kid did not participate in rush or go to Greek parties. UVA is only 26% Greek so students choose. Just like they choose everywhere to drink or not to drink. It's nothing like W&Lee which is 86% Greek participation. DS had a great four years, made a lot of friends with great values, graduated with distinction, is now overseas finishing grad work and applying to top
law schools. All on in-state rates.

"Federal data, collected under the Clery Act and compiled in this Washington Post article, shows that UVA had the 20th highest number of reported “forcible sex offenses” between 2010-2012 (41 reports) out of all four-year colleges in the country (public and private) with at least 1,000 students as of 2012. Virginia Tech had 27 reports in that period, William and Mary had 12, and VCU and JMU both had 11."

This is older so may be not applicable now?

Part middle class nova kid plus old money southern kid plus urm kid from all 50 states.

Add in preppy and fratty. Add in competitive academically. Add in a ton of beer and bourbon.

Add in great soccer, swimming, softball and lacrosse teams, inconsistent basketball teams, and a football team that can be ahead by 21 points but lose the game more times than I can count.

I’m proud to have gone there but I developed a bad relationship with alcohol and dating/ hookup culture that it took me years to overcome. Could have happened at any d1 party school but I think UVA’s fraternity and drinking culture is especially toxic.

People do think I, smart and add IQ points when I say I went there though.

This is accurate (except you forget the old money Northerners/NYC/boarding school contingency), and I developed that same bad relationship that took me a long time to get a handle on.

I think UVA works well for kids with the right combo of looks/money/connections to get the best out the Greek system, or the kids with enough confidence/smarts/self-respect to know they want no part of that. The floaters in between can have the hardest time socially.

Yes I think my son might be a floater - in his second year and always having FOMO. I don’t know how to make him feel more confident and it seems like UVAs culture is bringing the insecurity. However it could just be him . . .

How is posting data from almost 15 years ago relevant at all?

All the kids you didn't like in NOVA HS, all in one place, with a few kids of expats coming in from other parts of the US.
