But reputation-wise I do think it's probably on the bottom of the New England state system list. I'm not totally against my kid going and he actually already has is honors college offer for UMaine in his back pocket while we waits for the other app results, but its reputation is probably the least strong of the ones you mention and really not too valuable for an out of state kid who doesn't plan to stay in Maine. (that said, living in Maine IS pretty great so maybe they come and stay...)Good luck!

Is the weather not bleak?

Maine is a big state so it depends on where you live. I mean it IS New England but so many people have moved here from more temperate climates and are very happy. We moved from the lovely Mediterranean climate of the Bay Area and do love the seasons. Southern Maine/Portland area is pretty much like Boston, spring just about 7-10 days behind. Orono (location of biggest UMaine campus) is a couple of hours north of here so, yes, winter comes earlier and lasts longer. I wouldn't want to live that far north in a long term way, but for a kid who plans to stay/work in Maine and build local connections its not terrible. The campus is kind of in the middle of nowhere though, which is another consideration.

We are from Marin originally, and spent three years in Maine in a coastal fishing village. It was nothing short of magical, with a solid dose of tough mudder. Highly recommend!

U Maine does not have great retention rates. I think this is a reflection more of the specific population (kids who might choose mid-study to be carpenter, baker or lobsterman) than the school. Fair enough. Employment is hyper local in Maine. If your kid is determined, they can do well there. And it is very affordable in state.
