Steve Sheinkin's Fallout is about the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. It's more for younger teens who might not have already studied it in school.

Not a book, but I'd consider a paid subscription to Tangle (email newsletter with special content for subscribers). I subscribed a few weeks ago and am thoroughly enjoying it--and I also feel more informed than I was before.

Anything about Putin because he is a major influence in this world. Plus he’s fascinating

I’ve seen on Youtube that Politics and Prose frequently has authors come to the bookstore to talk about their latest book.

Maybe you could get him a gift card and then take him to see the author of his choice.

(As far as I know, these events aren’t limited by age, but I’ve never actually attended one in person. I’d check their website for details.)

I prefer books in this category written by journalists rather than by historians. But others prefer the opposite. It might be fun to get him one of each and see what he thinks/prefers.

I know you said non-fiction, but you might also want to consider contemporary spy novels (post-Cold War.) They may interest him, too. If you search the DCUM Book Club board, some threads should come up with different ideas (Re Russia, China, Iran etc.)
