That's what I was going to suggest! His new book "War" just came out last month. It was excellent.

My 18 year old son requested it and liked it.

I was like that and enjoyed PJ O'Rourke and Dave Barry, but they might be too dated now. Sarah McBride has a very good autobiography; I also liked memoirs by Tammy Duckworth and Katie Porter. Recoding America by Jennifer pahlka and Administrative Burden by Don moynihan and Pamela herd are wonky but good. For classics, the power broker by Robert Caro, the LBJ biographies (forgot the author), and The boys on the bus. I also really liked A Prayer for the city by Buzz Bissenger (who also wrote Friday night lights). It's about the mayor of Philadelphia. Home Town by Tracy Kidder is similar in that it's about local government and I really like the author.

The Doris kearns Goodwin biographies might be good.

Decades ago I really liked the Tip O Neil biography. It’s really dated now of course but might be interesting to read an account of old style politics when people still did cross aisle deals.

The massive Vietnam book by Karnow is good if you can deal with a book that long and detailed.

Does he read Spanish? I’m reading a great set of articles by Mexican journalists called La Ira de Mexico. The articles are really well written. There might be a translation available. They are the kind of long form journalism you might see in The Atlantic or something like that.

A lot of the ones suggested are kind of boring I think. I’m kicking myself that I can’t think of better ones.

These are dated and right-winged bias (think McCarthy, not MAGA), but Allen Drury’s books are really well-written political fiction (especially Advise and Consent, which won the pulitzer).

Bill Maher has a new book out, What This Comedian Said Will Shock You. I haven’t read it, but I’ve been watching his show for years, and it’s based on segments from his shows.
