Nothing about this question makes any sense.
I’ve lived in DuPont for 25 years. Fed lawyers aren’t throwing work networking events with dresses at DuPont mansions (sorry DuPont keeps autocorrecting and I’m too lazy to change). What kind of part is this? Is this one of your fiances work colleagues who is having a house party in the DuPont rowhouse on a Saturday night and invited you guys? In which case, 99 percent of the people will be in jeans. It’s a dc house party. This is still my world in dc after 25 years and I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone show up in a dress to a run of the mill rowhouse party. This is not a dressy town. Or is this a party for a specific purpose? Ie holiday party, celebrate the new client, etc? Is it specifically a work party? Or is it just someone your fiance knows from work? And who are these “fed lawyers” who are so rich and glitzy? (I’m a law firm partner in dc and make five times the top paying fed lawyer salary, and our row house parties in dc are still jeans mostly, so I’m having a hard time imaging what fed lawyer is this fancy.) Unless this has been identified as a work specific party with a specific purpose, you are way blowing this out of proportion. |
| As others have noted, you are fully out of touch. Wear jeans and bring a $25 bottle of wine |
| I think when OP said "fed lawyers" she was referring to wealthy lobbyists, not federal employees. |
Even the, unless this party is a specific networking event or work specific event, everyone will be in jeans or similar. No one is wearing cocktail dresses. I literally don’t think ive ever seen anyone in DuPont circle wearing a cocktail dress unless they were going to a wedding in one of the clubs on the circle. This is not a dressy town. |

The DC lawyers nitpicking this post to death is about the most DC thing ever
Would be interested in how it turned out, OP! |
So true! I was about to chime in myself to nitpick some of the nitpickers, but thankfully I read your post first and had a modicum of self-awareness. Signed, another DC lawyer 😊 |
We’re not nitpicking. We’re telling op she’s going to look like a rube if she shows up in a floor length gown to a DuPont house party. |
| Black pants, nice shoes not too high, nice jacket. Well manicured nails and smart hair. Do not go overboard with makeup. |
