Bragging rights.

OP here. I guess this is the real question, right? I would say primarily the opportunity to attend lectures and other activities that they offer to members. Would probably use a gym sometimes, or at least our kids would. Place to hold events/ party maybe once a year. Would probably eat there with family or friends maybe once a month. Also interested in meeting other members, as we are fairly new in town.

I understand that most of these clubs offer reciprocity to other clubs internationally and across the US. That has some appeal as well.

What is the initiation fee and dues?

LOL those members aren't taking the Metro to the club.

OP here, and I don't care what other people do! We take Metro everywhere. Is that a problem for you?

Why do you care if its a problem for her? You need to grow a much thicker skin if you are going to join a Club.

NP and curious: assuming someone does have sponsors and all the right connections to get into one of these, how much money are we talking about?

The saying goes that the Metropolitan Club is for people with money, Cosmos is for people with brains and UClub is for people with neither!

I really don’t like the Met Club. SO old fashioned. That said I do like Sulgrave, which is also old fashioned but without the misogynistic flair.

Met Club has a thriving younger set. Sulgrave is exclusive.

Best downtown club - by a mile - is the Metropolitan Club. Used to be a member, but no longer. Loved it.

I don’t believe your kids would actually be able to use the gym. If they’re minors, it’s not open to them, and if they’re adults, they’d need their own membership. Also, have you seen the gym? Referring to the cosmos club, think bad hotel gym w/ outdated equipment and a few 80 year olds. University has better sports facilities. Lots of our friends joined for squash. Otherwise, I’m not sure you’ll get out of them what you’re expecting, unless you’re in your 80s. Why not look at a country club? More members your age and equal amounts of talks and events

I have been to the Cosmos Club a few times, as my father’s club in London has reciprocity (Athenaeum). It skews very old and academic. The food is solid if slightly conservative. But definitely a very intellectual crowd, if that is your vibe. Very anti-phone and doing business.

These clubs are uncomfortable for children. They advertise being kid friendly, but try taking kids there to swim. You’ll get dirty glances.

Chevy, Columbia and Congressional are where families go.
