Well, I am sure you are relieved to understand that they aren't interested in fining you for being a douchebag and not filling it out. But as for their comment about "questionable constitutional authority", this issue was taken to the Supreme Court long ago. It is a settled point.

I think "idiot" is the word you're looking for.

So don't fill it out - but don't complain when there aren't enough spaces for your child to go to school. Don't complain when it takes law enforcement 20 mintues to get to your house during a crime because there aren't enough cops in your neighborhood. Don't complain when there enough hospitals, etc.

You get the drift?

OP, no one gives a flying f#$@ about your individual details but this information is very useful for social scientists who are looking at American life in the aggregate. I promise you that when they run regressions on income and refrigerator ownership they are not interested in whether you personally have one in your house.

OP, you are such a plant.

You can see every version of the ACS going back about 15 years. This is nothing new, and it has nothing to do with this presidency.

Well, that excludes all Republicans. I'm afraid they all voted to support spying on U.S. phone calls and internet traffic.

You obviously don't know any of them.

Just leave the questions that you don't want to answer blank and move on with your day. But like PP said.. don't complain when things don't improve any.

ARE YOU FED UP WITH THE AMERICAN COMMUNITY SURVEY (ACS) THREATENING YOU WITH FINES, PENALTIES AND IMPRISONMENT SHOULD YOU FAIL TO RESPOND AND ANSWER THEIR SURVEY?

If so, write a letter or email to Congress to Support Bill H.R.3131 - The Bill has been introduced on the floor of Congress but has not been passed yet.

Support Bill H.R. 3131 since it will make participation in the American Community Survey VOLUNTARY. If you want to know what's in Bill H.R. 3131 and which congressional leaders are sponsoring it then visit:

American Community Service (ACS) - 2010 Random survey

You are required by law to respond and answer all questions on the ACS survey. If you are fed up with this particular survey, then send a letter or email to Congress asking the bill H.R. 3131 be passed immediately.

Among the questions asked on the American Community Survey (2010) are:

The first section of the ACS asks for full name of each person living in the household, the total number of people, how the people are related to each other, the date of birth, sex and race of each person and whether any are of Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin.

The second section surveys housing, asking whether the household is a mobile home, a one-family detached home, a one-family home attached to one or more houses, an apartment or a boat, RV or van.

Then the ACS asks what year the building was built, when "Person No. 1" in the housing section moved into the home; the size of land the home is on; what agricultural products were sold from the property in the last 12 months; whether the property was used as a business; how many separate rooms are in the house; whether the house has hot and cold running water; whether the house has a flush toilet, a shower or bathtub, a sink with a faucet, a stove or range, a refrigerator and a telephone; how many cars, vans and trucks are kept at the property; and what fuel is most used at the property – gas, electricity, fuel oil or kerosene, coal or coke, wood, solar energy, or "other."

Further, the housing section in the ACS asks what was last month's bill for energy, what was the cost of water and sewage for the housing unit in the last year, whether anyone in the household received food stamps in the last year, the monthly rental or mortgage cost of the unit, an estimate of the resale value of the housing unit, the unit's annual property taxes and the annual cost of fire, hazard and flood insurance on the property.

The ACS wants to know if Person No. 1 in the household is a citizen, if the person was born in the U.S. or when the person came to the U.S.; whether the person had attended college in the last three years and what is the highest level of education the person has completed; the person's ancestry or ethnic origin; whether the person speaks a language other than English at home, and if yes, what language; whether the person lived in this housing unit or an apartment a year ago; whether the person is covered by health insurance, and if yes, by what type of health insurance.

Next, Person No. 1 must answer if he/she is deaf or has difficulty hearing; if the person is blind or has serious difficulty seeing even when wearing glasses; if the person has difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions because of a physical, mental or emotional condition; whether the person has serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs; whether the person has difficulty bathing or dressing; whether the person has difficulty doing errands alone such as visiting a doctor's office or shopping because of a physical, mental, or emotional condition; what is the person's marital status; whether the person has given birth to any children in the past 12 months; whether the person has any grandchildren under the age of 18 in the house or apartment; whether the person has ever served on active duty in the U.S. armed forces; whether the person has a VA service-connected disability rating, and if yes, what percentage is the VA disability rating.

The ACS also asks whether Person No. 1 worked last week for pay; at what address, town, city and country did the person work last week; how did the person get to work and if by car, bus, railroad, taxi, motorcycle, bicycle or on foot; whether the person, if unemployed, has been actively looking for work in the past four weeks; whether the person, if unemployed, was available to start work if offered a job or recalled to work in the past week; and how many weeks the person worked in the past year and how many hours per week.

Finally, Person No. 1 must disclose whether his or her most recent work was for a private for-profit company, a private not-for-profit, a local government, a state government or the federal government, or whether the person was self employed in their own incorporated or not-incorporated business, or whether the person worked without pay in a family business or on the family farm; the name of the employer; the type of business; whether the business was manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade; or other; the exact job description of the person and his or her most important duties; his or her income over the past 12 months and the amount of that income that came from wages, salary, commission, bonuses or tips; whether the person received any Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits, or any other type of public assistance in the past 12 months; and the person's entire income over the past 12 months, both from employment or public welfare sources.

OP - what exactly are you frightened of? That someone with a criminal past will know what your mortgage payments are? Have there been any cases of bad things happening to people who fill this in?

I'm a social scientist, so understand very well the usefulness of this type of information at an aggregate level. I've never fully understood what makes people scared.

Hey, OP. I can find out almost all of that house information on the internet -- state tax department records are online. Your house assessment, square footage, lot size, whether it's a SFH, TH, apartment, whether you have a basement, etc. When you bought it and for how much. Who sold it to you. And it goes on.

Nothing's private anymore. Nothing.

The information is completely confidential. I use Census surveys in my research and the data is never, ever, ever, ever (shall I say it again?) associated with an individual person's name.

This data is essential, however, for understanding which areas are rich or poor or many people don't have running water. And for understanding that a public campaign in a certain census tract needs to be in Spanish or Vietnamese (bad example to give to OP, I'm guessing). Let's try again: how will we know how your extending your precious Bush tax cuts would affect people if we don't know how many are at each income level?

Only a very naive person would fill out the American Community Survey (ACS) with all the risk associated with the need to protect personal security. Let’s see if I have this right...I am required by law to give up my private information to ACS which imposes fines from $100 (possibly up to $5,000 in fines/penalties) and even threatens me with imprisonment should I dare deny them of this information and yet, THEY DO NOT EVEN HAVE THE RIGHT TO PROTECT MY PERSONAL INFORMATION. Every act that creates something like the American Community Survey also contains provisions by which it is ABSOLVED of all responsibility for failure to protect this information. History shows, between 1942 and 1947, the data that was collected by the census bureau was handed over to the FBI and other organizations, at the request of President Roosevelt, and that’s how the Japanese were rounded up and put into the internment camps. For additional reading on this topic, visit: http://www.lizmichael.com/census.htm

The American Community Survey (ACS) survey is not the required short form census we all receive in the mail every 10 years - To be sure you are not confused on the ACS survey, you should visit the following url link for clarification:

The RNC is in full support of having bill HR 3131 passed into law. See below for info regarding this bill. It's about time for the Democrat's DNC to get on board now so we can have a good chance of getting this bill passed into law.

RESOLVED, that upon the approval of this resolution the Republican National Committee shall deliver a copy of this resolution to each of the Republican members of Congress, all Republican candidates for Congress, and to each Republican state and territorial party office.
As approved by the Republican National Committee, August 6, 2010

HELP MAKE THE ACS SURVEY BECOME VOLUNTARY, NOT MANDATORY!

This is an AMERICAN issue - Democrats, Republicans & Libertarians alike should all be concerned about the ACS survey asking intrusive questions that violates our right to keep our personal information private. I am a democrat and cannot believe how progressives are treating this survey as a non issue--it is unconscionable to say the least.

Support Bill H.R. 3131 to make the ACS survey VOLUNTARY - It has already been introduced in congress but hasn't passed yet.

Write a Letter to Congress to support bill H.R. 3131. This will make participation in the American Community Survey voluntary. For information about the bill and to find out who your congressional leaders are, visit:
