Lowest housing costs in Virginia that voted blue and has good schools?

I've looked at (by which I mean poked around on Redfin) Western Albemarle, Roanoke, areas around Richmond. To be honest, nowhere is INexpensive. Where should I be looking that meets my criteria? I grew up in a county around Lynchburg, Va, and housing is so cheap there, but you couldn't pay me to move back or raise my children there.

It is going to be hard to find a rural area that you would tolerate and urban areas are typically more expensive.

Maybe consider that the squares on the map are never all that red or blue anyway. 60-40 is a reliable congressional district but still only a couple in ten voters more team 1 than team 2. No matter where you live there are going to be some people around who don’t vote as you would prefer, and that is good.

I suspect you are male, white, and heterosexual. Be female, black, or gay and then say “and that is good.”

Rivermont neighborhood in Lynchburg is blue and has some really affordable homes.

But you have to live in Lynchburg, which has terrible schools and is super red.

Because paranoia is better, as is avoiding people unlike yourself. You're the problem. Move somewhere and be a good neighbor, and it'll be fine almost anywhere. You don't have to be "affirmed"; nobody is going to tar and feather you if you're not deliberately offensive. Most places are live and let live, believe it or not.

There's so much wrong with this statement that I don't know where to start, but I'll say this, yes, we all need to be affirmed. You are affirmed constantly if you're in the majority. And Lynchburg isn't "live and let live." I grew up there, and my friends' families prayed over me because my parents were divorced, which is immoral.

With SN kids you dont just need good schools, but school systems with funds for additional services. Counties with additional services for post school - depending on the level of independence expected for your kid.

The problem with your statement is that some of the world finds it "deliberately offensive" for a gay person to hold their partner's hand in public, which is not exactly "live and let live," IMHO.

So limiting such people to environments populated exclusively with people who display the same behaviors is a reasonable thing to do? That's merely promoting segregation.

Patrick Henry High School has a Great Schools rating of 3. I realize Great Schools is just test scores, but test scores aren't nothing. 3 is REALLY low.

I answered this because my adult DD lives in Roanoke. Doctors, lawyers, and professionals send their kids to Patrick Henry. Probably a lot easier to get in UVa from there rather than Northern Virginia. Virginia Tech has a medical school in Roanoke City and the medical infrastructure is growing by leaps and bounds.

Western Henrico, except it won’t be super low cost housing. You’re asking for a unicorn and seem quite ridiculous. You want a cheap but good house, in a great school district, that is very democratic voting. It sounds like a first time homebuyer on house hunters.

But as for a good public school system, in a diverse are of Virginia, that is blue voting, outside of the DMV, the first thing that comes to mind is western Henrico (not eastern). Chesterfield is good too but it’s purple over there. Richmond City - NO. But get a relocation agent and find something within your budget in western Henrico. Should check the boxes.

But you went red, correct?

Maybe swimmable back in the day, but no way now.

Not a POC, but we are an LGBTQ family, so similar considerations. But my children's god parents are in Virginia, and my aging family is in Virginia, so it feels hard to get too far away. I don't know.

Maybe Hagerstown or Gettysburg?

Of course it's not reasonable. But "deliberately offensive" is in the eye of the beholder.

I think you know that, though.
