I am from there, family still lives there. FWIW Most of the Lebanese I knew there were Christian not Muslim. They have voted D and are became tired of not being heard. Ditto many of my Black neighbors. When are the Ds going to wake up? They are looking for someone who at least sees them even if they don’t help them. They are sending a message. |
Many of the earlier posters have identified important motivations and I will add to those. Biden won Dearborn with 80 percent of the vote, so the city has normally been very Democratic. However, a significant number, perhaps a majority, of the Arabs in Dearborn have their roots in southern Lebanon. That is exactly the area that is being destroyed at the moment by Israel. Biden and Harris don't seem to be doing anything to stop the fighting. The administration's point person on the conflict, Amos Hochstein, is an Israeli citizen who served in the IDF. As such, there is considerable doubt that he is an honest broker as a negotiator in this conflict. In contrast, Trump's point man for Lebanon will be Tiffany Trump's father-in-law who is a Lebanese-American. He has been campaigning vigorously among Dearborn's Arabs and telling them that Trump will end the conflict. The result is that the voters in Dearborn were presented with only terrible choices: Trump, Harris, third-party, or not voting. The majority chose the terrible option that at least promises to end the fighting. |
So, in other words, they would never support a woman as president. |
Being heard about what? Socially conservative issues? Like LGBT stuff? I’m not arguing with you - genuinely trying to clarify. |
Can you name one thing that Biden didn't let Netanyahu do? Do you realize that on election day, the IDF announced that northern Gaza had been ethnically cleansed and that no Palestinians would be allowed to return? Is the blood of the Gazan children killed while Biden was president on your hands? Also, as an earlier poster pointed out, many of the Dearborn Arabs are Christian. |
If anything, a vote for stein did exactly what they wanted. It got the Ds to at least notice them. It ore them at your own peril, DNC. Their vote for Stein was never about getting her elected. |
As I’m sure you’re aware, Jeff, there are also a significant number of Arab Muslims too. After all the national Mosque is there. I get annoyed when people automatically equate Middle Easterners and Arabs with Muslims. -person from neighborhood in that area |
As the previous poster said, the Middle Eastern community of SE Michigan is not a monolith. But, the community in Dearborn, which this thread is about, is fairly liberal. The current mayor is Abdullah Hammoud, who is of Shia Muslim Lebanese heritage. He is a progressive Democrat and a Bernie Sanders supporter. He supports LGBT rights and would have no problem voting for a woman. He refused to meet with Trump and would not endorse Harris. His issue with Harris is her support for the wars in Gaza and Lebanon, not her gender. |
The violence in the Middle East, of course! Some are very conservative socially, but plenty aren’t. Ds have failed to understand our recent immigrant wave generally tends to be fiscally liberal but socially conservative. |
I also get annoyed which was why I made the clarification. The previous poster had only mentioned Muslims. |
You mean, why did the majority of the entire country go for Trump? It is a mass rejection of progressive ideology and the lean toward socialism |
OMG. Stop trying to make this all about gender! You are completely obtuse. |
Can you name what Trump won't let Netanyahu do? And do you think the IDF really cares whether they are firing on a Lebanese Christian community or a Lebanese Muslim community? |
I am Christian Lebanese and from the east side suburbs. Interestingly enough, the Christian Lebanese community is far more liberal minded. Maybe it’s because their community is older and more established and I guess “blended” in rather than assimilated. Frankly, there is a lot of distrust between the Middle Eastern Christians and Muslims in SE MI. I do wonder how that plays out on the national politics scene. |
A vote for Stein was a vote for Trump. And, it doesn't matter a damn bit whether the D's notice them or not when you force the D's to lose and they are then powerless to help you. Bottom line is that a lot more Gazans and a lot more Lebanese will suffer and die over the next four years. |
