I have seen it done with a glaze. Like this: https://countrycupboardcookies.com/never-fail-angel-food-cake/

I drizzle melted chocolate on top

I would never frost an angel food cake.

I'd change the type of cake. Angel food cake doesn't typically have frosting and frosting kind of defeats the purpose of the lower-sugar/fat angel food cake.

I love angel food cake. The purpose of having angel food cake, to me as a kid, was that I got to eat angel food cake. Still is, for that matter.

I agree that chocolate whipped cream would be delightful, or a milk chocolate frosting if the kid insisted on traditional. I agree about having some unfrosted cake for picky people.

Or plain whipped cream with food coloring?

Angel food cake is not frosted. If not whipped cream and fruit, it should be drizzled with a lemon, raspberry, or chocolate glaze.

If the child likes chocolate, this seems like the right answer.
