I wouldn't fly all the way to Asia specifically for Hong Kong. But, we just went there for a few days as part of a larger Asia trip, and it was great. |
I loved it in 2018. Don’t know current situation. Took a poverty walking tour written up in The NY Times. See if it still exists. Enjoyed the ferry at night. Enjoyed seeing the servants picnic all over Central n a Sunday. |
I went about ten years and had a great time. Also went to Taiwan.
Are you worried about the political situation or something else? |
That should say, ten years ago. |
I’ve been several times for work and once as part of a longer vacation in Asia. It’s interesting for a few days but I wouldn’t make it the only destination. |
There isn’t a deteriorating security situation in Hong Kong. Even people who would actually be a target for CCP detention or harassment in other parts of China will be fine in HK. Random Americans won’t have a problem in HK. |
Having lived there--I'd say go for 3 nights. Eat (too many good restaurants to list but everything from cheap eats to fine dining), go up to the Peak and walk the loop and take photos, take the cable car to see the Big Buddha, walk through the zoo/aviary/HK park , bring a bottle of wine and get a foot massage at Happy Feet, window shop in Central, take the Star Ferry to Kowloon, grab a drink at Ozone Bar at the Ritz Carlton. Go out one night in LKF. Then fly to Vietnam or Cambodia or Thailand and have a beach vacation! |
+1. HK is great fun. If you like Asian food you’ll be in heaven. The above is a good list. You could also consider taking a ferry to an outer island and doing some biking/nature hikes too. |
Yeah I enjoyed a little ferry trip out to and around Lantau Island. That was super interesting. I also took a ferry over to Macau and didn’t particularly like it. There was some interesting architecture but that’s it. I do dislike gambling so YMMV there. |
I've been and it was pretty interesting for a few days. I wouldnt make it the only destination unless I lived in the region and could justify going for a long weekend.
Make it a jumping off point for south or southwest China (which is what I did) or SE Asia. (I went to Guangxi and Yunnan.) I'd keep a very close eye on any Covid protocols -- I'm not sure if Hong Kong had all the same lockdown issues. |
I was just there this summer. I couldn't see any Covid protocols that were particularly onerous. No requirement to mask or even to show you were vaccinated to enter. The food was amazing, lots of interesting things to do with or without kid. |
Sure, for a few days. It is a decent stopover for other Asian locations.
I go diving in Asia annually and usually stop over somewhere. I get my tickets 9 months + in advance, so I’ve been avoiding Taiwan. I just don’t trust that political situation to hold. |
absolutely not
maybe after poohxi is dead |
Was there in the late 80s, no need to go back except as possibly a few days stop on my way to or from somewhere else |
Yes it’s a fun place to visit for a few days. |
