Which part? I live in DC and I absolutely believe it as I've seen dogs at the grocery store almost daily for the last year or so. We almost never go out to eat but I would not be at all surprised to see multiple dogs on a patio or for them to behave really poorly with no action from their owners because I see stuff like that on sidewalks and at playgrounds and and parks all the time. Yesterday I was trying to cross a street with my DC (who was on a scooter) and there was a guy walking three dogs on suuuuuuper long leashes and the dogs were just running everywhere and tripping this guy up and I literally had to grab my kid up before his scooter hit one of the leashes like a trip wire. This was happening in the middle of the street with cars waiting and other pedestrians. The guy was like "hahaha so silly I don't know why this is happening" and literally everyone else was like "it's because you are being $hitty -- shorten the leashes and learn how to walk to dogs idiot." I know a number of great dog owners (and plenty of great dogs) but hey are heavily outweighed by the terrible dog owners I encounter these days. A lot of people who have dogs shouldn't at this point. |
I love dogs and have always had a dog but I can’t stand when people bring them to the grocery store or frankly any store. I have no issue with restaurants that allow them on patios. |
We live in DC and our kid goes to DCPS. A parent recently brought their pit bull mix into the crowded building during Friday morning family assembly. I was shocked and surprised no one said anything. It's not a service dog, definitely an emotional support dog.
Our school has a big sign on the gate that "NO DOGS ALLOWED ON PLAYGROUND" because that's where kids play and dogs obviously need to piss and sh#t. Lots of parents want to walk their kid + dog to school and security has to turn them away at the gate and remind them of the rules. It's definitely getting crazier every year with dog owners just blatantly ignoring the rules. |
I was shocked to learn some cultures and religions think dogs are filthy dirty animals. My dog thinks he's much better than a human. |
You are sick of people complaining but also think the solution is for people to complain to the establishments. Why not both? For all we know OP did complain. And they are also complaining here because this is very irritating behavior that is becoming way too common and many of us are happy to commiserate about it. Your sister is fortunate to be getting a break from you. |
I understand people like dogs but I don’t understand why the dogs are everywhere now. I can’t walk down the sidewalk without having to veer off multiple times to let dogs go by. They pee in our yard and make the grass die. The grocery store. When I pick up lunch, dogs paw at my pants in the line. Can’t sit outside anymore because giant dog tails smack your legs or the dogs want to make friends. They’re walking around in the airport and at every kid sports game. It’s just so weird that they’re everywhere now. People used to leave dogs at home. |
I entirely agree with you, OP. And I have a dog. No, I don't bring him into these places. It's unsanitary. |
I love my dogs but don’t bring them to restaurants or anything like that. It’s unsanitary and rude. |
Agree and it is great!!👍 |
Please say something about this to the administration I beg you. If you raise it nicely as a "clarification of the rules around dogs on campus" they will issue a reminder to parents not to do this kind of thing and also a sign they need to be on the lookout for this kind of thing at assemblies. What I've learned about dog people in the last couple years is that if they see one dog doing a thing that is technically not allowed many of them will think "okay I guess that IS okay!" So if they see someone at TJs with their dog then they will start bringing their dog to TJs. If they see other people letting dogs off leash at the park with all the signs that say "Dogs must be on leashes" then they will also start letting their dog off leash. If they see other dog owners leaving bags of dog poop on the side of trails to "pick up later" they will also start doing this and trails will be filled with bags of dog poop. And so on. We need to start addressing these violations early and often before they become habit. There are parks in DC that were basically colonized by dog owners during the pandemic and now some of us are trying to get them to stop using the parks as off leash dog runs where dogs just piss and poop everywhere (so that human adults and children can use these parks for playing and picnicking -- their intended purpose) and it's been awful because once it becomes habit the dog owners are convinced that they own the park. Social distancing basically created a window for this to happen and now it's really hard to undo (especially because park police and regular police absolutely will not enforce the leash laws or address the dog poop issue). So speak up! Everyone! Do not allow dogs everywhere to become the norm. |
They are telling you what type of customer they prioritize. Govern yourself accordingly. |
Why? |
I think children's spaces should be dog free and dog spaces should be children free. I've been on both sides.
So many dog owners bring their dogs on school playgrounds where signs clearly state no dogs. Kids with allergies can't play...plus I have seen dogs pee/poop on the playground, dogs be aggressive to kids (snapping/barking) or aggressive with other dogs. I've seen too many dog owners insist their dog is friendly, yet the dog is jumping and hyper -- not at all well behaved. Flip side is that I also hate when people bring kids to dog parks. Kids eat snacks and then the owners get mad that dogs come to beg. Dogs are playing at high speed while an aimless 2 year old just stands there about to get slammed into by one of the dogs. Dog owner doesn't pick up because they are too busy watching their kid(s). You can't watch a 3 year old and supervise your dog at the same time. |
Wait, so now dogs shouldn't be outside? |
Agee. They are targeting certain clientele..that spend more money. |
