S/O How much do you spend on new costumes for Halloween?

Hot tip: check out thrift stores in September and early October for cheap but great costumes. This year my kid is wearing a costume we found at a thrift store for $3. I bought some tights and a headband to complete the costume so it will be about $12 total. A steal!

Though I will say that we don't really mind spending $30-40 on a costume if it will go into the dress up collection and get heavy use. Disney costumes get tons of use in our house so we've splurged on some of those which have also been used as halloween costumes. I don't think my kid has had a costume that didn't wind up in the dress up rotation since she was a year old -- she loves dress up.

Usually around $75+ for Etsy costumes (per kid) BUT my kids get a ton of use out of them. We usually go to a ton of fall/Halloween events and parties and they love playing dress up at home with a box of costumes. I sometimes buy multiple pieces and combine into a unique thing my kid wanted to be. So to me, it's not a big waste of $ bc it's not a one-time use thing.

Join your local Buy Nothing group - people are always getting rid of costumes around now. I’ve gifted several in the last few weeks.

I used to do a mix of DIY, secondhand, and Amazon, but last year’s costume for my son took me hours and hours (it was an elaborate and very successful costume) and I’m glad both kids want an Amazon one this year. About $20 each.

My kids don't get new costumes every year. They typically have to use something already have every other year..... Sometimes it's putting a few together like a zombie air pilot.... I'll spend about $40 on the year we get new costumes per costume

The thrift stores near me even have a section with costumes and suggestions for how to use regular clothes in a costume way.

We always make costumes and just buy little add-ons, hopefully from a thrift store. Sometimes they're free with stuff from around the house, sometimes we'll spring for a bigger add-on if the kid is putting in time to make it.
