After a years of spending $40/$45 I think we are looking at masks only this year.
$20-30 per kid
5 dollar
I normally make their costumes which is not free either but cheaper than store bought. This year though both wanted to be Star Wars characters so I bought new to them costumes. One on Facebook marketplace for $25 total ( $10 costume and $15 light saber) and one costume on EBay for $15.
$50 per kid
$50-70 per costume with accessories
How old are the kids and what costume/character to they want to be? I bet we can come up with a cheaper, DIY version compared to the Halloween store. Also, look at Halloween props the day after at DEEP discount for future years. Think skeleton hands, vampire cape, princess tiara and wand, etc.

Mine has been variable because my kids have recycled costumes (or elements of costumes) many years. So some years it's $0.
I always try to steer them away from just purchasing a pre-fab costume. For financial reasons, but also for creative reasons (and not just generating more waste every year as well.) This year, my son wanted to reuse last year's costume and we added a $7 accessory that he didn't have last year. My daughter found a cheap hat at party city ($5) that she can decorate to look how she wants it to look, and will need a mask (they run $10-15 on amazon). So $15-20 total. The rest of the costume is stuff she already has as clothes or from past costumes (dress, gloves, black boots, etc). |
As little as possible while still making them happy. Last year I bought a Statue of Liberty costume but made a torch ourselves. The torch would have been more than the rest of the costume.
|
$20-$30 per kid as well
We also pick out a new decoration (under $20) each year. |
Caught a break this year, $15 each for the full costume.
We were pretty lucky to not spend any money on costumes up until our daughter was 7 year old. She would wear costumes from her older nieces. But for the last 2 years, she wants to decide each who she wants to be and unfortunately, we have to buy now the costume. Even though, I have costumes sitting in our wardrobe from her nieces now and also some that I have received from a neighbour's daughter, she won't wear them. So overall, we saved money and now we will be spending some each year I guess.
We usually buy off Amazon or go to Party City. I’d say anywhere from $25-$35.
Some years nothing. Some years $40. Never more than that.
I aim for $15 but will do anything under $20.
