I would not believe everything you see on the news. They oftentimes don't fact-check. While this may be true, you cannot assume that they are correct. The news recently had a woman saying dozens of kids were killed at a location in DMV, and that's simply not true. Also, there was another person accused of something terrible
with kids a few years ago and as things came out the parents lied. The media doesn't do its job anymore. They just put out the headlines.

When you wonder how people enable abusers, just think of this person. I'm assuming you are voting for the orange guy too.

Evidence from the sexual assaults were entered into the CODIS database for routine search. The database holds DNA profiles from convicted offenders, unsolved crime scene evidence and missing persons. The male DNA profiles matched one another, indicating that the same person was linked in the assaults.

A genetic genealogy testing led to Mercado’s identification. Forensic genealogy is a technique in which investigators use a known DNA sample to build a family tree of possible connections based on DNA profiles from publicly accessible genealogy websites.

For the past several weeks, police obtained a warrant to get swabs of Mercado’s driver side door handle of his car and the inside of his cheek. Testing of the cheek swabs collected from Mercado found that his DNA profile matched evidence collected from one of the previous assaults.“

Yeah - and this isn't just the "media putting out headlines." He is in custody. Major news outlets are all reporting from in front of the courthouse. They're televising law enforcement press conferences announcing the arrest.

Is there any word on what led them to him? I understand there's the DNA match, but how did he end up on their radar in the first place?
