Ellen comedy special on Netflix

I find it fascinating how personal people are taking this. There are so many kind of terrible people whose art we still choose to consume. I wonder what it is about Ellen that produces this severe of a reaction. Especially when her wrong doing -- while I'll agree she sounds like a horrible boss -- also sounds like a LOT of bad bosses. Like I've had two bosses I'd rank on the same level if not worse and I'm just a regular person.

fair point. I think it's because she built her entire career on being nice so of much of it was a shock. To see how toxic her workplace was and how caustic and volatile it was behind the scenes after scores of people started coming out with their stories it made it real.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I choose not to watch comedy specials (mainly) from comedians I don't like, like Louis CK for example. I know all these streaming services track it, and it's my small protest to refuse to watch lol.

I think she’s truly evil. Very dark energy. She gets off on humiliating people.

It’s called instincts; a visceral reaction. She is repulsive.

Can someone explain what she actually did that was horrible? How did she terrorize people? Was it because she liked to prank?

This thread gives you an idea. There are others.

She’s cancelled.

I think she legitimately was a victim when canceled for being gay, but she can’t own her subsequent toxic behavior and instead is continuing to play the victim card. Her latest Netflix special seemed carefully curated to rewrite history and restore her legacy.

I found the intro really obnoxious. It's a compilation of her career playing while she walks to the stage and when it gets to the stuff about her getting cancelled it shows her looking very emotional and upset. And then she goes out on stage. I don't like it because it's not funny and feels self indulgent and this is a stand up show.

However the show itself is actually pretty funny. It's mostly very much her old style of standup -- observational humore about cars and parking and chickens and other random topics. But she does touch on being cancelled and other more personal topics like coming out on her sitcom. It's all well written and delivered -- she's a pro. She is clearly still very much upset about what happened to her career and a lot of it does serve as a kind of defense of herself. But she doesn't come off as wallowing and most importantly -- it's funny.

I don't know how I feel about Ellen. I found her talk show really cloying and fake. Also when all the revelations about her being a bad boss and having a toxic workplace came out I was just coming off a job with a a really toxic environment and I was primed to be like "f*** Ellen." But watching the special made me appreciate her as a joke writer and stand up. She's genuinely good at it and made me laugh which is the whole point. She's probably not a great boss because most people are not. Perhaps she should just do stand-up instead. Lots of stand ups are mean or jerks and it's really not a problem.

I wonder how this happened. She’s horrible and I wouldn’t watch. Did you watch OP?

I watched it and she seemed bitter and played the victim. I did enjoy watching her show during Covid. Both she + Rosie O'Donnell had great shows and then both turned nasty + mean when they became rich.

I went in with an open mind to watch it. I sincerely didn't find it funny at all.

You literally just quoted OP's review of the special. So yes, she watched.

I'd argue both dropped the masks when they hit the big time.
