7th grader no homework

There is nothing for them to do during the Learning Seminar period but play on the laptop. Even PE class has much wasted down time of sitting on the bleachers for the first 2 weeks, creating a laptop fitness tracker, and doing a basic test where they grip their hands behind their back, etc. This is a drastic change to the intense 6th grade level of homework last year.
+1. No HW

There's a lot of down time with the block system since twelve year olds can't focus longer than 15-20 minutes.

Love everyone being so, so specific about their special AAP snowflakes.

I think replies are helpful here where OP wondered if only honors kids have HW and other posters are responding that theirs don’t have homework either- so not that one group gets homework and another doesn’t.

They gradually build them up. First, they are learning how to manage their time, then homework multiplies. MS is such a change for kids — both academically and emotionally — which is why they take an incremental approach. Your child will start to have more homework, as well as learn how to take notes, write, organize a presentation, etc.

Do the teachers teach how to take notes and organize or are you saying kids just figure it out on own?

Ha, I am doing this too (private, but I know you can also do it via enrichment). I was tired of my kid making mistakes in math because DC rarely had to practice problems enough times to be able to do it almost without thinking.

Homework isn’t equitable. Especially at the younger ages.

Homework causes a lot of stress for our family because DS almost always forgets to do it, or leaves it until the last minute. It’s so much work because I constantly have to check online to help remind DS what he has to do (yes, he has ADHD).

The OP specifically said that her kid was not getting homework and said that it must only be Honors kids getting homework. People replying that their kids who are taking Honors or AAP classes simply clarifies what level the kids are at and if they are getting homework. The majority of folks seem to be saying no homework or limited amounts of homework so far in 7th grade regardless of the level the kid is in.

There is a study skills class that is offered for kids, I know a lot of my kids friends are taking it in 7th grade. The class is supposed to help the kids improve their orgnizaiton, note taking, and give them some additional time to get home work help.

That is not unusual for kids with ADHD. It takes time but hopefully you will help them develop a system that will make it less stressful. But it is better for them to start learning this in 7th grade then in HS or, even worse, college.

Another 8th grade Kilmer parent here and I haven’t see hw yet. Kid 2 is there now in all honors classes. I regularly saw math hw years ago when my older child was there but now that doesn’t even come home. I am told it all gets done during Learning Seminar. Everything. Time will tell.

Maybe it is also teacher dependent? My kid (AAP 8th grade last year, but I believe honors and AAP are same in MS?) had mostly homework in Algebra, science, and Civics. In Civics, she had to analyze 8 articles a month, complete a packet, and part of the homework tied into English/grammar. Other kids in Civics had no such thing but had a lot more presentations. But yes, I decent amount of work got done in learning seminar. She is now at Marshall in all honors and there is definitely more work/studying for tests (vs. just skimming the material).

In theory AAP is "advanced" which usually meaning more/faster work.

Lack of homework is to show that kids are not being held to higher standard than regular student.

You assume parent show off? How show off on anonymously forum?

Wierd.

Longfellow Middle School ,. I guess only kids in honor classes will get homework. There was nothing wrong with assigning homework.

Ask the teachers. Kid could be not being truthful
