7th grader no homework

Anonymous
As we start our 4th week of classes, my DS is reporting still no homework.

Longfellow Middle School ,. I guess only kids in honor classes will get homework. There was nothing wrong with assigning homework.

Really? My MCPS 7th grade kid has an hour a night at least...

A lot of work is done in class. There are studies out there that suggest homework isn’t impactful, except maybe in languages and math — your kid will get some math homework, as well as study guides for tests. *Somehow* the kids will learn. My older two were very prepared for college-level work, and they are recent HS grads. My younger one just started HS (so, in MS the last two years) and is equally-prepared for HS work.

My kid is at Carson in AAP and he has had maybe 10 minutes of homework a few times. It feels like the class periods are long enough thatmany kids can get homework completed at school. It is also early in the year and that might change.

At Kilmer (AAP), I feel like there was a big jump from 7th to 8th. My 7th grader has had mostly Algebra and history homework so far.

My kid is in AAP at Longfellow and also has no HW. They’re learning quite a bit w/o and I’m fine w it.

Robinson Honors kid - 8th grade now. Very little HW last year all year; he almost always could finish it in class or in Advisory. Same so far this year.

Another 8th grade Kilmer parent here and I haven’t see hw yet. Kid 2 is there now in all honors classes. I regularly saw math hw years ago when my older child was there but now that doesn’t even come home. I am told it all gets done during Learning Seminar. Everything. Time will tell.

My child had zero homework -all honors- at Katherine Johnson. Lots of in class work. HW was stuff not completed in class and studying for tests.

Homework of any kind is no longer a “thing”’in FCPS. Strict limits have been put on teachers so that students have a limited amount- this includes reading for AP and IB classes. Guess it means osmosis will do the trick.

Not sure I would have learned much of anything in HD if I had not been assigned math and foreign language homework. As well as reading full length books.

Carson AAP basically no homework. I have to pay money for my kid to get homework elsewhere.

Also, 7th Grader at Longfellow --all Honors class and no homework at all! There is a lot of wasted time during the day with word searches and colored pages coming home. There is nothing for them to do during the Learning Seminar period but play on the laptop. Even PE class has much wasted down time of sitting on the bleachers for the first 2 weeks, creating a laptop fitness tracker, and doing a basic test where they grip their hands behind their back, etc. This is a drastic change to the intense 6th grade level of homework last year.
