DC is dirty because Muriel Bowser is bad at her job

The council member, Mr Frumin, thinks that tolerating encampments and outdoor latrines is part of Ward 3 being “welcoming and inclusive for all.”

Found the poster who hasn’t traveled but is just convinced they are sophisticated because they live in the “city.”

Exactly.

The frequency of marijuana smell across town is disgraceful. And now they are approving dispensaries along the Wisconsin and Connecticut Ave. corridors that are packed with high rise buildings which will become unlivable for families and nonsmokers.

Compared to other major cities DC is not that bad.

Certain parts have always been messier than others, long before Bowser. What was the reasoning then,

There is trash everywhere, the parks are run down, the garbage cans are not emptied.

And then I hear parents complaining about the Ward 1 council member.

What????

This is purely a mayoral problem. The agencies are run by the mayor. DPR runs the parks and it is terribly run, so its people don’t do their job. DGS is supposed to fix broken equipment. Same. DPW is supposed to clean the streets. Same!

The agencies are NOT DOING THEIR JOBS. Because they are poorly run.
The council has almost no influence over this - if people complain to them they just go to the mayor.

It’s the mayor’s fault!

Why aren’t people blaming Muriel Bowser?
Makes me crazy. We can’t fix things in a democracy if the public doesn’t know who’s at fault.

Did not and would not vote for Muriel, as I never thought she was qualified for the job. However, I have lived in many cities, including NYC, Pittsburgh, Richmond and Tampa and DC is not as dirty as you think. Do your part, and it can be better. My trash, recyclables and compost are picked up in time every week. I’m happy in my little corner where trash is concerned. Now if only we can get citizens to pick up after their dog and stop allowing their cats to take a dump in my yard, I could be a wee bit happier.

Bowser was an ANC member and a member of the City Council. She has a Masters in Public Policy. What would you like to see in a “qualified “ candidate? Specific personal qualities? Corporate experiences? A law degree? DC isn’t a state, so experience on that level doesn’t seem reasonable— unless you deliberately want to exclude people who have spent most of their professional lives actually living in DC. I’m not asking if there’s something that would induce you to vote for her — but rather, why you view her as unqualified for the job and/or what you think the qualifications should be. Just curious.

Brianne Nadeau definitely has plenty to be criticized for, but keeping Ward 1 clean is not her job. It's the mayor's.

Well, she did advocate for food vendors without licenses to set up open kitchens on the sidewalk on 14th leaving grease stains on the ground and scattered food waste. Even the worst restaurants will occasionally mop the floors in their kitchen.

They moved a lot of the voucher holders into older buildings along those streets. Is it so surprising that suppliers follow our customers? The drug dealers are already doing that.

They should be calling in the heads of dpw, DMV, oag, DDOT, and mpd every month and improving traffic safety and enforcement. They should be calling in mpd and the US attorney every week and figuring out why arrests aren't turning into prosecutions. Then they need to take the info they get and use it to make legislation or budget choices. But most of the council members are not smart enough to do this. They literally can't identify problems, then choose goals, then write bills that would achieve those goals, then pass those bills, then allocate appropriate funding, then monitor implementation. It's embarrassing but I doubt most of them would even be able to lay out that sequence and hope to achieve it.

+1 You have the DC Department of Buildings Director who was holding down 2 other jobs (1 full-time) and got a slap on the wrist even though she was barely working 1/3 of her required schedule for years. Did DC go after her? No. The amount of waste of tax dollars is mind boggling.

It really isn’t. Also the Council funds the agencies and approves the mayors budget. The Council should give the mayor more money so she can give the workers more money

When I read that a dispensary is opening on the UDC campus I thought it was an Onion article. I just don’t understand this city.

I’m not making a case — I’m asking a question.

That's true, but it's still not her job (or her office's job) to go clean up the mess. It's the mayor's. The mayor can complain about Nadeau advocating for this policy, quite reasonably, but that doesn't make Nadeau the mayor of Ward 1.
