What is it about me that makes plain clothed security follow me at Target?

Who cares... maybe they have a vendetta against people who look like you, either way, not your problem. Whenever something like this happens I enjoy taking extra long, stopping to browse things on my phone, pretending like I might stuff something in my purse then at the last second swerving to drop it in the basket, etc. Just to wind them up and waste their time.

I walk very fast when shopping so security would have to run behind me. I would then notice. Lol

I’m a very basic 30s white woman and get watched closely by security on the regular. I think it’s because I’m kind of aimless and indecisive when I shop so I linger around for a while. I often carry a big longchamp and I think big bags like that arouse suspicion too (though I know that wasn’t the case for you).

NO, do not do this ! Concealing items in a store is adequate probable cause for an arrest--even while still in the store.

OP: Happens all the time in Walgreens & in Target. Both stores view every customer as a shoplifter. It is essentially unwritten company policy for both of these stores.

One time I was pregnant and aimless and slow and walking past the White House and they actually asked me to move along, point blank. Which, I mean, fine, but I could not possibly have been more harmless. Not that they know that. I just felt like a whale.

I worked at a Target store for 6 years. 90% of the management & security were worthless cowards who ran & hid any time trouble started to develop. If they are following you it’s almost certain they DON’T suspect you of anything.
