Scarlett?

Some of you need to know the difference between Scarlet (the color) for Scarlet Begonias or Scarlet Letter, and Scarlett the name for a person, like the O'Hara and Johannson ones.

I know you’re a racist.

This is how I feel about it. I don't hate it, but it has a bit of a teen mom, dance mom, giant bows and little kid high heels vibe. Like naming a kid Journey or Paris.

If you do use it, OP, don't lead with your theory about Scarlett O'Hara not being racist.

I always find it interesting that people discard a woman's achievement because they hate the subject matter.

Who watches dance moms? Who knows any names from it?!

It's fine. That book and film are old enough to be out of the Zeitgeist at this point.

The only name I'd totally avoid is Adolph.

Anonymous wrote:We love the name Scarlett and would like to name DD this. Is it controversial because of the Gone With the Wind association? I actually loved the book and movie growing up. Scarlett is a flawed but very strong female character who wasn’t so much racist as scrappy/manipulative…

Other names we are considering are Violet and Charlotte, but we don’t like these as much as Scarlett.

She grew up embedded in a deeply racist culture, benefiting greatly from the institution of slavery, with little introspection about its impact on the slaves. Why do you say she wasn’t racist?

That said, your dd can be named Scarlett without being racist. Use the name if you love it.

Gone With the Wind is fiction. When I hear the name Scarlett, I think Johansen.

I think people do, but both spellings sound the same. Pretty sure people are reacting to what the name would sound like.

It's a fine name. My rescue cat arrived with this name. We've kept it, but mostly call her kittycat.

Scarlett and Charlotte sound strikingly similar but Charlotte doesn’t carry the same negative connotation.

She's fiction, not an actual woman. I can get my women's empowerment from other subject matter that isn't so repulsive.

By the way, where is the "my dog's name is X" poster? Our neighbors' dog is actually named Scarlett.

Agree. It sounds like a stripper name.

I knew a family with daughters named Scarlett, Bonnie, and Tara. In Connecticut, of all places.

Trashy name, sorry.
