Scarlett?

We love the name Scarlett and would like to name DD this. Is it controversial because of the Gone With the Wind association? I actually loved the book and movie growing up. Scarlett is a flawed but very strong female character who wasn’t so much racist as scrappy/manipulative…

Other names we are considering are Violet and Charlotte, but we don’t like these as much as Scarlett.

Don't think it's a problem. Most people will think of Scarlett Johanneson at this point

I think it’s lovely! Agree with the ScarJo point!

And prostitutes. Scarlett letter. I grew up with one. She’s a party girl still at 50.

I mean I definitely think of Gone with the Wind and completely think the main characters were racist as heck. But it is true that many people might think ScarJo. So maybe just don’t tell people you actually are naming her after a woman who wanted to preserve an extremely racist system.

She grew up embedded in a deeply racist culture, benefiting greatly from the institution of slavery, with little introspection about its impact on the slaves. Why do you say she wasn’t racist?

That said, your dd can be named Scarlett without being racist. Use the name if you love it.

I love it, OP. I say go for it.

I hate this name, both for the racist undertones but it’s also just kind of trashy.

I know one and it’s been fine, I like it.

My 8 yr old niece has a friend named that. Sometimes she calls her Scarlie.

+1 don't defend GWTW when you're explaining why you chose the name. That's really off-putting.

I'm the 1st ScarJo poster

I don't love these names, but Scarlett is now popular enough that no one will think you named her after Scarlett O'Hara.

Scarlett Begonia for all the Deadheads. I love it!

I assume GWTW and apologist for “light racism.” And with this OP, I would be correct.

Fever or Gone with the Wind

Nickname Scar could be cool though
