Here’s a way to add in the fall feeling without breaking the bank or making your house feel cluttered.
Swap out all hand soaps for fall scents. Add a pumpkin or two to your front porch or down your dining room table. Big bowl of apples in your kitchen. Diffuse fall scents Rusty orange, or burgundy throw for sofa. Foods to consume Donuts and cider Pumpkin spice drinks I am minimalist in my decor and so I mostly just bring in fall with my actions. |
Just remembered a couple more things. I buy cheap napkins for $5 and put them out in the kitchen. ( small vignette/White plate on island with pumpkin or leaf napkins sitting on top) I also will add a fall colored towel in the powder room. Open up my windows when it starts to get chilly for fresh air. |
Fall decor is actually worth the investment if you buy tasteful items that could last September-Thanksgiving.
I bought several velvet pumpkins that I bought years ago that I arrange in bowls in the living room and dining room. They're in a variety of colors that match my decor, not just orange, so not Halloween-ish. Also have some mercury glass pumpkins too. A fall themed doormat could last September-Thanksgiving too. Same with mums and other fall colored florals for outside and inside too. I like the ideas above regarding fall candles and hand soap too. In October we usually go to a pumpkin patch and get real pumpkins for outside and I throw on a Halloween wreath for the month. |

You might like books by Myquillen Smith, aka "The Nester".Her book "Welcome Home is a good one for the issues you're asking about. She talks about ideas for each season and she refers to herself as a "cozy minimalist". Basically, think natural versus lots of little things from Michael's. One large pumpkin on a hall table versus three small mass produced pumpkins from a store....go outside and collect tall branches versus buying faux flowers, pick a color scheme (naturals, jewel tones, etc) for pillows and think about the season not just Halloween for example. My style is completely different from hers but her books are thoughtful. And can help you avoid wasteful spending. Avoiding the cutesy is the heart of it. |
Umm, what's wrong with this? Christmas decor can stay up for a month. Easter maybe a week if you do anything. Valentine's Day if you have little kids, maybe 2 weeks. Fall decor can generally last the season. |
My family likes eating squash so we just get a bunch and put them in baskets and on trays and by the end of the season they're eaten. |
