Getting an EV - buy new, buy used or lease?

Anonymous
Don’t get an ev unless you can get home AC charging ( level 1 or level 2). Fast dc charging isn’t that cheap on long distance trips. I would get a lease or buy used..

We own 1 EV and lease another. Have never leased before, but this was an end of year sale (2023) of 10% off plus the 7500$ off for leasing. In the end it made more financial sense to lease this car, esp since the 2024 models were coming out with 50-75 miles more range. So we have no plan to keep this car beyond the 3 year lease. I would not have bought a car with only 240 miles range (our owned one is a long range with over 300 miles range).

For example the Mercedes EQS and the BMW iX cost over $100k new, but can be found in the high or even mid 50s a year or two old with low miles. If you find an EV for less than $25k and your annual AGI is less than $150k, you can get a 4k rebate. You can probably find a two or three year old car that was $50k new, $24k now, and you can get it for $20k with the rebate.

What EV’s would you recommend to buy used? Which to lease? I would be looking at spending mid- to lower range and am willing to try a variety of sizes. I would be a first-time EV user.

How will you be using it? Mainly a grocery getter/commuter car? Longer trips?

Around town. We have a second car for longer trips.

I’d buy a used one. Model ys and Mach e’s can be found for under $30k. My main concern isn’t that it’s going to crap out, it’s that there will be advancements and new ones in 4-5 years will have ranges over 500 miles, making the used one with 270 mile ranges worthless. I’d rather have a $30k car have no resale value than a $60k one.

For around town, I don't think you could do much better then this:

I am not a fan of the color, but this is the sport model of the i3 which has a few more horsepower and wider tires. The i3 was far ahead of its time and, as a result, this car is still fairly modern. At this price, if your income is below the cut-off, you can get a $4k rebate, making the car about $20k and, if you are in DC, there will be no sales tax. Only 17,926 miles.

But, there are a lot of other good deals out there if this is not your thing.

I recommend buying a slightly used Chevy Bolt, no older than 2022. Great little car at a very low price. I bought a 2023 Bolt because there weren't any used cars available at that time. I'm satisfied but buying a 2022 is the smarter deal money wise.

We leased with a deal. DH was also concerned about the change in technology in the next five years. The lease comes with 1 year free charge at one of the charging systems (not Tesla). We wfh so we don't use it all that much. DH drove it once up to NJ.

We LOVE our Tesla Y and it was a great deal, but one thing that surprised me was that our car insurance TRIPLED. So just make sure to factor that into your all-in price. Subaru and a volvo was $192 a month, Subaru and a tasla is now $347.

I agree with 08:12. Look for a Bolt. 2022 models qualify for the $4k credit if you qualify.

ioniq 5 sel 2025 was this month is $209 a month with a $4k due at signing for 36 months. That is a very good deal. You can decrease what is due at signing by increasing your monthly. Hyundai is really making a push to be a player in the EV market with their new plant in GA coming on line.
Volvo 2023 has some low miles good deals. Have to shop around but there are deals to be had.

Question is how much do you drive in a week, suv vs car, do you live in the city, how are you going to use the car, what you like, etc. You want a home charger. If you live in the city a smaller car is nice just for parking etc.

Again used 2023 are out there and the 2025 are coming out. The 2025’s have longer range 335-400 plus per charge on the top end models. You could see some deals on the 2024 soon.

Let us know what you get!
