DCPS withdrawal form

Especially in DC! What’s the truancy rate there. Oh, here you go - Across K-12, 43% of District students were chronically absent in the 2022-2023 school year, and 37% were truant.

OP here. Thank you for the responses!

Do you know what information is sent from DCPS to the receiving school?

This will sound rude but your DCPS doesn’t give two craps where your child is going this year and won’t think about you again. But they do need evidence your child is enrolled in a school. Because your child is of a compulsory school age. Please trust me, the registrar does not care. Once they click the buttons of your withdrawal, they’ll forget you were there.

When we left DCPS for the 'burbs, we just told the school we weren't coming back and they said that was fine. We were in PK4 at the time so my kid was not in a compulsory grade. We did not fill out any form - they just gave our K spot to someone else from the waitlist. This was pre-pandemic, so maybe the law has changed, but it seems odd to me that DCPS would need to know where OP's child is going to given that this was a non-compulsory grade.

For someone who seems to care so much about privacy, it’s ironic that you are not technically posting anonymously on this forum, “andyhomesearch”.

Anyways, I don’t understand your paranoia. Just provide the name of the new school before you making a big deal out of it raises lots of red flags.

We have moved out of DC into neighboring Virginia and completed the withdrawal form for my child who was in DC elementary school this past year. In the withdrawal form we did NOT mention the name of the new school my child was going to for privacy purposes.

The DC elementary school administrator is forcing us that we need to provide the name of the new school in Virginia otherwise, they cannot complete the withdrawal and mentioned that it would trigger a very long complicated process.

Can someone please advise us how to navigate this as we do not want to give the name of the new school where my child is attending now?

Thanks so much!

OP, we had the very same issue two years ago. We ignored the ES administrator who tried to force us to provide the name of the new school in VA for a few weeks, despite her repeated attempts to contact us. We were then contacted by a DC Child Protective Services social worker. The social worker simply asked us to provide documentation that we'd moved to VA in the form of a valid drivers license for one of us. We emailed her a copy of the license and she closed the case right away. End of story. Good luck.

You intentionally wasted limited city resources to indulge your Main Character Syndrome. Neat.

Seriously. Talk about a waste of resources… just give the name of the school. DCPS is working to tackle truancy issues so even if you could have slid by in the past, it’s unlikely now and you’re wasting a lot of people’s time fighting this very, very dumb fight.

Former registrar here - what gets sent depends on whether the receiving school requests it, but if they request it, it's the entire student file. You are also entitled to request it under FERPA, so if you have concerns there, you can request and inspect it.

To protect your privacy, you provided DCCPS with a copy of your driver’s license—which has now been added to a DCCPS investigation file involving your family—rather than just give DCPS the name of your kid’s new school.

Nice.

No one is going to stalk your family because you moved out of the District. Absolutely no one cares. But they do want to ensure a) kids are safe and b) truancy rates are accurate.

I don’t want to lie but just want to maintain privacy of my child’s education. Why is that so difficult?

Because that's how kids get hurt. They need to know they're actually enrolled somewhere else. Otherwise systems lose track of kids and that's bad for kids whose parents aren't as good as you are.

You really think DCPS cares where your child is in school now?

DC provided your child with free PK, you took a slot from another kid that could have benefitted from being part of that school community, and you think DC is the neglectful party in this situation?

PP wrote that post in such a smug manor but gave way more information to DC than the school. And now they officially have can a CPS case opened against them. And wasted time from children who really do need help from CPS. PP is selfish and thinks really highly of themselves.
