Mosquitos so much worse this year

Anonymous

As PP said, gobal warming is causing mosquito-borne infectious diseases to spread across areas where people were not expecting it.

We desperately need more genetic modifications of mosquitoes. Trials have been successful in a handful of countries, plus California and Florida. We need to implement GMO mosquito sterilization to more species of mosquitoes, across much larger areas than the test areas.

There are hundreds of mosquito species. Sterilizing and eliminating a few of the more dangerous species, those that are more human-aggressive, will not disturb the ecosystem and food chain.

Take an allergen or other antihistamine before you go out and you won't notice.

I always figured that late-summer skeeters were much worse than early summer because of evolutionary biology/survival of the fittest. The ones who were successful biters procreated, the wimpy ones did not. But that’s probably crazy talk.

The last few days have been unbelievable, plus little gnats.

I’m even seeing mosquitoes inside the house. I’ve checked all our screens and they are in good shape so I have no idea how they are getting in. It’s not like we leave doors or windows open.

Holy hell. I thought you were exaggerating but then looked it up.

I'm going to respray gardening clothes and hiking boots with Permethrin.

Hopefully enough people get sick from mosquitoes that we can bring back the neighborhood spray trucks that the hippie boomers got rid of

That makes zero sense. You want more so that you can then poison everyone to reduce it back to where it was at the point that you wanted more sickness? Insane.

Anyone else notice worse than usual mosquitoes this fall? I am not going to put on bug spray to go out to the garden for a few minutes, but I average 4-5 bites a minute which is so uncomfortable

Also, West Nile Virus is here. We're all gonna die.

OP, wear long sleeves, long pants, and if you have, a hat with mosquito netting, if you don't want to put on bug repellent. You can also get Pemethrin, and spray down your garden clothes (you have to let it dry, so prepare ahead), so you won't get bitten. This will last you through several washes.

If you put them on like bracelets, anklets, and a funky choker (so 5 of them), the coverage is enough to keep the bugs off for minor garden trips w/o being a PITA and leaving you reeking like spray. They're reusable, so you can put them back in their packages, zip them up, and save them for next time. Worth the 2 minutes and awkward 80s style vibes, IMO.

Thanks for the tip--just ordered a pack. I am willing to try, as I get pick just going on the porch to get the mail. As for DH? I don't think he's had a bite in years.

This sounds awesome. Can we please do this?

How do we advocate for genetic modification of mosquitos? It seems the only way.

All those advising people to wear long pants are not that bite-prone. I can get bitten wearing any fabric in full lengths.
