How many sick days per year do you take?

Anonymous
I take sick days for my kid’s IEP meetings and routine dr appts. When he was younger a ton of sick days when he got all of those childhood viruses.

For myself - In the past couple of years I think I took 3 days each for 2 bouts of covid; and 1 day for a really bad cold. I will say thay WFH definitely helped reduce the number of sick days because I could WFH while still testing positive and fatigued, but not actively sick.

Isn’t that a fun part about parenting they don’t tell you???

Rarely and only if I’m totally unable to function. Which is how I gave a bunch of people Covid when I only had a sniffle.

How do you all not get sick, especially when your kids are sick?

I work for myself. I only take if I’m actually sick. Once I had Covid and took a day off and another I was in the hospital with vertigo for 3 days. I may have taken the entire week off (a few years ago).

A lot bc in our company sick time includes all drs appts and care for another sick family member. We bill hourly so it’s less of a sick day and more like hours I need to bill to sick time bc I’m at the dr or a kid is at the dr or mom is in the hospital and I’m with her for a few hours etc. I rarely take a whole day off to be sick myself.
But we should take that time. I’m British and Americans are not as a culture very understanding of being a human. Have you seen that meme of the ooo difference between Europe and America where the American one reads ‘I am having kidney surgery but am available on my cell?’ Just take the time you need to take care of yourself

This is bad!
Weird pride wrapped up in not taking sick days.
Your company won’t visit you at the old age home

I have a weirdly strong immune system. My kid had ALL the childhood illnesses (like every 2 weeks for years, it felt). I only got sick from him one time when I was also on immune-suppressing meds.

I've taken zero in the last several years. I work from home and I haven't been sick enough not to work.

I’ve probably used 5 sick days in the 8 years I’ve been with my current company. I work from home if I’m not well enough to go into the office.

No but they will ask for a doctors note. Would you go to the doctor for sniffles?

We all have strong immune systems. DS is about to be in 6th grade. He's never had strep. He hasn't had a stomach bug since he was 3. He gets the occasional cold but DH and I rarely get it too.

And my work there is only one of us on shift and someone HAS to be there. So we don't have a huge pool to pull from if someone calls out sick.

Are all of your doctor's appointments on weekends or after work?

Only when needed.

Why would anyone take un-needed sick days?

I took a sick day yesterday. I had my annual physical and I probably could have just taken a half day for it. But f**k it, I wanted a 3 day weekend. Those b*stards get enough from me!
