???

She rose in the shadow of Adrian Fenty and was the chosen successor of "the green team" when Fenty flamed out.

Everyone had to pay homage to Barry on a city wide campaign.

True. But she is a populist and corrupt like Barry.

Exactly. “Bowser was Barry’s protege” is the kind uniformed take you see emanating from people who want to present themselves as saavy outsiders.

Right. Bowser was Fenty's hand-picked replacement in W4; Fenty ran as an outsider bringing new technocratic ideas to D.C. government and a break with the old machine, i.e., Barry. Then the Fenty-Gray campaign in 2010 was a real battle between Fenty and his west of the Park base and Gray, with more support east of the Park and east of the river. And Bowser was essentially Fenty's avatar when she took out Gray in the 2014 primary.

It's true that in the general election in 2014, Bowser pivoted to try to draw more black support in an election against David Catania, and to the extent there's anything left of Barry's machine in Ward 8 now, maybe they back Bowser, but Barry hasn't been a force in citywide politics in a long time — he's been dead for nearly a decade, and he was a fading political power even when he was still living.

No she didn't. She rode on Fenty's coat tails. You don't get elected in DC (at least at that time) if you didn't kiss Marion Berry's ring. He had nothing to do with running the city government. Those were different times.

Initiative 83 (https://ballotpedia.org/Washington,_D.C.,_Initiative_83,_Ranked-Choice_Voting_Initiative_(November_2024)) will transform DC politics and hopefully put an end to unpopular candidates coasting by on the basis of name recognition and split fields.

I-83 really will change things if Council lets it pass. Bonds is scared of it.

I-83 won't do much. The underlying problem is that general elections are meaningless and there's no accountability anywhere in DC Government.

Entering DC you see homeless encampments and trash under the highways. Shame, it's how we present our capital city to the foreigners? What message does this give them, that we are closer to being 3rd world? Ditto DC's urban parks and circles that used to be so beautiful/vibrant some years ago.

Guess who owns and maintains most of DC’s urban parks and circles? That’s right - the federal government!
