How much can a high GPA overcome an ok SAT score?

How much can the high GPA offset the SAT score when it comes to college admission? They will apply to a variety of schools, a couple top ranked but mostly in the top 50-75.

Where does you kid want to go? A high SAT score is more likely to pull up a weaker GPA than the other way around.

Your post is missing a bunch of info re your kid's school, ECs, how your fam demographically plays into things. And, all important, are you full pay?

Start off by planning to to apply EA to Tulane or BC and then stategize from ther.

If you’re applying to schools that are top 40, do TO.

No, it isn't. It's not even 25th percentile for UVA.

3.95 is weighted?

You are citing the range for students who submitted the test score. Only 50% of admitted students submitted a DAT score. Only 66% of admitted students submitted a score for either test. And the 1400 is ten points shy of the 25% percentile of that population. Paired with a high SAT, high rigor, and good ECs, recs, and essay....a 1400 is indeed perfectly fine to submit an application.

3.95 is weighted?

To clarify why I am confused: you said you child has a 3.95/4.83. If 3.95 is weighted, then the GPA is not very high, esp if you’re hoping to use it to overcome a lower SAT. Most people would have the denominator and numerator be both unweighted or both weighted, not one weighted and one unweighted. Since the denominator is over a 4.0, I assume that it weighted, so I am assuming the 3.95 is, too.

Not PP, but I don't think that is a fraction....that is giving both the unweighted and weighted GPA.
3.95- unweighted
4.83- weighted

Why bring up UVA here? It is 24 on USNWR. PP referenced T50/100 and specifically said TO for T40.

You have to look at how many students submit scores (54% for your UVA example). If you assume that the other half would have been below those who were confident enough to submit, then the 25th is really the ~50th. Some schools show that only 25% of students submit which means the lowest submitted score is likely actually in the top 25th of admitted students..

Oh- yes that makes sense.

No need. That score is enough to validate the GPA. Submit the score and you will be fine in the range of schools you plan to apply to, just be sure to have a couple of safety schools.

But only 50% of admitted students submitted SAT scores to UVA. So OP can go TO, like PP said. UVA is top 25 not 50-100.

My friends and relatives had a good laugh when I told them that my Asian kid scored 1420 on the SAT. You're expected to score 1550 or higher on the SAT if you're Asian. Anything lower is a disgrace. LOL....

Why are you sharing your kid’s SAT score with friends and relatives? My kid would be so pissed.
