Drinking water in the dorm, ideas welcome

My college had water fountains. I ended up on a college campus on a very hot evening recently, waiting for my kid who was taking a class there (note: little kid, don't have a fit about me helicoptering) so I went for a walk and then go thirsty. There were no water fountains, only filling stations. There was a vending machine, but it only had things like Monster and Mountain Dew. It was ridiculous. Plus the vending machine didn't take cards, and the bill thing was broken and I don't carry change in my pocket like I did in college.

So, the strategies I would have used as a college student weren't the solution here.

Kids in dorms have meal plans and can drink water with their meals, like we all did back in the day.

I think I only ever drank water with meals in college. They'll be fine. Let them figure it out.

It is a ridiculous question and it doesn’t need to be asked. Clearly the fact that you are now trying to enable him to never have to clean shows the issue. Doesn’t sound like you have ever expected him to do domestic work and you haven’t taught him basic life skills or instilled in him basic responsibility so now he will need to figure it out on his own. But stop making things worse. Leave him to it. A self cleaning water bottle to save him rinsing out his own is insane.

Hands down the most ridiculous helicopter parenting post I’ve ever seen

Couldn't agree more. If your kid can't figure this out on their own there is no hope for them. You've raised a non functional adult. Congrats.

Do you call their professors too?? Jesus lady.

I agree he can figure it out, and that if he isn’t thirsty enough to motivate him, or having medical issues then he probably isn’t actually dehydrated.

But as someone who slept through breakfast every day in college, I definitely drank outside of the two cafeteria meals I ate. Now, some of that was soda from vending machines, but my budget was limited so a lot of it was from water fountains or paper cups filled at the sink. Now, with the emphasis on avoiding single use containers a water bottle makes sense.

I never had water in my dorm. Never drank from drinking fountains. This is not a real problem.

There is nothing you can do to make your 19 year old drink more water. Just accept that and move on.

I went to boarding school, and hated drinking regular water, so my mom would get me cases of nonflavored seltzer, which I kept under my bed, and would drink occasionally. I recycled the cans.

I haven't washed my water bottle in years. Not dead. Sorry not sorry.

yeah, i wouldn't be crowd sourcing a solution for this. tell kid to wash his bottle or do without.

he is going to make a terrible husband.

+1

Nobody needs to drink constantly from a water bottle. And I say this as someone who is addicted to toting mine around all the time. 😀

She’ll be fine. Truly.

Best advice is do not make this your concern in any way.
