fcps 25-26 calendar

I think we can all agree the school calendar is a bloated idiotic mess.

Unfortunately, the School Board doesn't seem to care. They are only good at keeping kids out of school.

Why do parents like the long summer? After about 6 weeks, my kids lose interest in camps! I find they are expensive and their schedule never really works for me (plus, I have several different kids at different camps so I'm running all over the place half the day!) I can't take that much time off work so I'm working all sorts of crazy hours to compensate.

But when I suggest doing something like the British system (4-6 weeks off a few different times a year), parents say they like the long summer. What is to like about it?

The calendar seems longer than when I was a kid… maybe by about 2-3 weeks? My memory isn’t great though. I wonder what teachers think of the shortened summers? That always seemed like the best perk of the job.

This sounds like our summer as well. I'd support longer stretches off during the year but all the odd days off (and half days for my elementary aged kid) are a mess and wreak havoc on our schedule.

Extending the school year back to the end of June is unacceptable.

The school board should fix this calendar instead of focusing on controversial things like rezoning.

How is the 17th the end of June? Calm down. Larla will get her camps in.

Going 3 weeks into june is unacceptable. It prevents high school students from participating in most summer programs, which are designed for a traditional school calendar ending around memorial day. June is completely wasted time, because all the worthwhile instruction ends with AP exams in May

Why is this county so bad at electing competent, moderate school board members??
until a few years ago, we went into the third week of June all the time. High school students found plenty of programs and jobs.

I would much prefer this. Aside for a few weeks at the beach, summer has become a terrible time to travel. What’s probably challenging is staffing the camps during the year, because there aren’t any college kids in town.

These 4-5 day weekends are awful though.

That’s the rub. We go later and start earlier every year to make room for more and more holidays and days off.

It is the 2nd half of June... the end of June.

FCPS needs to adopt a normal schedule like most school districts in the country that ends around Memorial Day.

HS teacher here and they leave school early. I work at an affluent school and it’s not one or two. When the calendar was like this before, many withdrew early with permission to go off to their college summer programs, internships, camp counselors, club sports tournaments, summer travel opportunities etc. Teachers are told to let them take finals early, back when more classes had finals. I imagine this will happen again. Absences were very high those final weeks in June.

We also started after Labor Day.

The start date was moved to August in order to end the school year in Early June, shortly after the AP exams and SOLs.

So little learning occurs in June.

Teachers are burned out, students are completely checked out, and there is nothing left to cover in the curriculum.

It is a complete waste of everyone's time to extend the school year to late June, just to add in a bunch of random days off throughout the year.

Those random days off force so many families to use all their vacation days for childcare, so there is nothing left for summer vacation.

It is a stupid, selfish calendar and should be axed for a normal, shorter calendar.

Summer programs for high school students start early June... not July.

College freshmen start to leave for school in early August.

A late June end to the school year is ridiculous.

The 25-26 calendar needs to be scrapped and replaced with something that ends no later than June 5th.
