College and University Discussion

They're both great schools, ND getting the rankings edge over BC, but realistically in the scheme of life graduates from both places have great opportunities.
Encourage your kid to consider South Bend vs Boston. Being Boston adjacent can be a lot of fun and the winters are a little milder than South Bend. These things matter more to some kids than others, but for some it can affect their overall happiness. (I have family members who have attended both schools, most of whom loved both, but one in particular didn't like South Bend and hadn't given enough consideration to her urban preference. Yes, Chicago is 2 hours away from SB, but that's far enough that it's not part of the regular social experience.) |
Plenty of Catholic-lite at both schools. |
ND has separate sex dorms and curfews for opposite sex visitors. It’s definitely more religious but students can practice as they choose. In terms of symbolism, Students at both schools may wear crosses, Christmas lights and trees (where permitted), Ashes for Ash Wednesday and Easter baskets goodies will be sent from home. |
DP. Easter basket goodies sent from home? Come to think of it, I ordered some easter bunny chocolates on Amazon for my kid. Is that supposed to indicate a major cultural difference? Christmas lights and trees, yes, typically Catholic universities might have a large Christmas tree somewhere on campus, complete with lighting ceremony involving hot cocoa and carols. Not really understanding your point - the tree indicates religiosity in your opinion? Most students at either school do not wear crosses. |
curfew at ND is midnight on weekdays and 2am on weekends. can you sleep over at bc? I personally find this concern overrated - you live with a roommate, 2am is really late enough for any visitor. Sex is not limited to overnight hours if that's the concern. |
| ^^Forgot to add, PP, you are correct that ND's curfew really the only aspect I can think of that would be significantly different from other colleges. BC doesn't have that. |
|
Notre Dame and Georgetown both a half step up in prestige over BC.
One nice thing about ND is the kids all leave after graduation. Nobody is staying in South Bend. Which means anyway you want to go after, there will be friends going that way too. BC kids tend to stick to NE. Georgetown kids tend to stay in DC for first jobs. |
BC dorms are coed, separated by floor. There’s no policing. |
Strongest endorsement I’ve ever seen for BC. |
ah! it was different in my day! but I also wouldn't especially like a roommate who had overnight visitors! my roommate would have definitely been down for that - zero boundaries. |
A personality trait? God help us. |
To clarify, I believe the PP was saying alumni status was akin to a trait for ND, not for BC. |
Yes, ND alums bleed leprechaun until death. 🍀 |
Devils advocate, if everyone is an adult, able to convey their boundaries to their roommate, and navigate intimate relations on their own, why is an opposite curfew required at all in 2024? |
I get that you don’t care. People from other faiths might. I have a friend who had moved into our town. I didn’t think anything of it at the time but there were a Lot of Christmas lights on the houses. There was a nativity in the town center. He said, ‘wow are there any Jews in this town?’ The symbolism that is inconsequential to you, is noticeable to others. |
