Dogs caught the car they were chasing and are being dragged along ... what's the problem?

well i had already mixed metaphors by talking about knocking out mistruths AND trolls... then you said the trolls were dogs catching the car. I love the line, so I'll allow it.

“ WASHINGTON — President Biden, facing a political crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border in the early days of his administration, tapped Vice President Kamala Harris to lead a high-profile response that would bet heavily on improving conditions in three Central American countries.
It was known as the “root causes” strategy. The border, administration officials argued, was only a symptom. If the United States could improve economic, security and political conditions in Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, fewer people would risk the perilous journey and much of the problem could be solved, they reasoned.”

It’s mere semantics to argue she was not the “czar.” By that logic, no American has ever been a “czar;” only Russian dictators are czars.

She was appointed to solve the border crisis. She failed miserably.

Fair enough.

Road rash at those speeds sure is a beast.

Nope. She was given no power, she was not put in charge of the border, she was not told to devise border policies or even work on border security.

She was told to hold diplomatic talks with the leaders of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras about what THOSE countries plan to do to make their countries better and less likely to send migrants towards the US.

That might be true, but that's not the narrative that's sticking to her like it or not fair or not. Her ties to the Biden administration are both a blessing and a curse.

She's just going to have to change the narrative which I think can be done.
That would be another benefit of Kelly on the ticket, from a border state.

Biden asked her to handle some of the diplomatic work "solving the “root causes” of migration from countries like Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, tackling the issues that spur people to flee in the first place, like drug violence and lack of economic opportunity."

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/17/us/politics/kamala-harris-border-czar.html

So her "job" was to hold diplomatic talks with the governments of Central American countries and find out what they're doing to stop being terrible places that migrants want to flee from.

Now that we know this, we can talk about her a little more clearly, and hopefully we can use this thread to help identify when people are being disingenuous about her role and we can educate those who don't know.

And how did she do on that? Anything get even remotely better on the border? Orrr are we only now at the least crossings during the Biden\Harris administration because they finally decided to put some restrictions in place? (Not to memtion it’s the middleof summer and crossings always naturally decrease some in the summer due to the insane heat…)

Harris raised her hand during the primary debates 4 years ago and said she’d decriminalize illegally crossing the border, institute a single payer healthcare system (which on its own is fine) but then allow undocumented migrants the same access to that system and all other government benefits.

Singe payer is fine, if we’re not overwhelmed by healthcare tourism. If you’re a foreigner in Canada, do you think you can go the doctor for free? No, you get billed for it personally. Only Ontario and Quebec provide clinics that offer basic healthcare to undocumented migrants for free.

That’s the only way single-payer works. Everyone pays in through taxes but only legal residents and citizens benefit.

For the same reason SS and medicare have a year or two’s worth of surplus funds due to undocumented people not qualifying for benefits. If they did qualify they would be a net negative on the trust funds.

Don’t even need to bring up Biden putting her in charge on addressing root causes of migration/call her the birder czar. Just point out the stuff she supported in the issue 4 years ago when she ended up dropping to 3% support from actual Democrats.

If she wants to win, she needs to take a hardline here. Cause most Americans (55%) are not even pleased with the OVERALL amount of immigration—not just illegal. They want less overall.

The good news is that Biden has the toughest border policy of any American president ever and Biden is inheriting that. And Trump is the guy who demanded his party NOT pass comprehensive legislation to toughen things further.

OOPS.

The first part is just not true, and the second part is intellectually dishonest if you ACTUALLY read the bill. I did, I read all 300+ pages of the immigration section. It was a bandaid that wouldn’t have solved anything, and the best parts Biden just ended up signing an EO to implement on his own.

Even if he blocked it cause he wanted to campaign on immigration I’m glad he did, because it wouldn’t of done much that the president can’t already do. And migrants and trafficking cartels aren’t stupid, they’d of figured out how to get around it real quick.

She was “leading a high-profile” response and had a “strategy” because the “border was a symptom.” I hope she has a better strategy now about how to address this so she can save us from Trump.

Seems to be nailing it so far.
