Are you avoiding deli meat because of the recent listeria cases?

Anonymous
I’m avoiding it. Heated deli meat is gross - did not enjoy during pregnancy.

Two deaths linked to listeria food poisoning from meat sliced at deli counters
Md. and Va. among 12 states affected by listeria outbreak linked to deli meat
Of the people investigators have been able to interview, “89% reported eating meats sliced at a deli, most commonly deli-sliced turkey, liverwurst, and ham. Meats were sliced at a variety of supermarket and grocery store delis,” the CDC said.

Wouldn't this be the first step to pinning it down? From my (brief) read on CNN, it's the sanitizing of the deli department that is the biggest factor. Or a big factor? Because of cross contamination? So name names.

Does one meat have listeria from a bad producer and introduces listeria to the deli

I avoid it because I find deli meat to be gross.

That's my hypothesis but then they slice clean meat with same slicer....

But they don't sterilize the slicer between orders, obviously. So I am worried about cross contamination from the Applegate turkey, etc.
DH ate some for lunch. He heated it a little in microwave but I don't think it was 160f. I didn't eat any.
What to do? He only eats turkey and Swiss on ww for lunch. Like for 20 years. Makes it himself.

Tell him to throw it in a skillet and heat it. Flip the meat and melt the Swiss on top. It’s quite delicious.

Our Whole Foods in FFx had no deli meats available.

+1 I'm guessing WF is one since they aren't carrying deli meat right now.

Wow. Will tell DH and make sure he heats it well if he won't let me toss it.

Or place it on the same counter. Or cut the sandwich with the same knife.

The roasted turkey breast I buy says it is antibiotic free, all natural and the ingredients are turkey, water, salt, and rosemary extract. What makes this unhealthy?

You were in a deli.

I avoid it because it is 1) nasty and 2) unhealthy. I wouldn't dare feed my dog deli meat.

I bought a pound of turkey from Harris teeter last week. My kid has the most massive diarrhea I’ve ever heard. For hours. Wonder if he got a piece with listeria on it.

I buy a chicken whole roasted and cut the meat off. I don’t buy deli meat.
