RMSC tryouts

The kids are practicing at a variety of alternative sites, so the program exists even if the site isn't operational

Its the hardest to get into.

Based on what data?

Clearly you are not rmsc. It’s the most selective.

It's the most selective because it's the cheapest, at least at the developmental practice levels. So if you're in MoCo and you're looking for a swim club for your eight year old, or even your 10 year old, it's a very attractive option. And then because they have such a large group from which to draw, the really fast kids often stick with it for the advanced practice groups, even though those are not significantly less money than other options. It's a case of multiple things being true: they have some incredibly fast swimmers and also the quality of instruction for the younger kids/non-advanced groups is highly variable, at best.

I think the previous poster meant that the Rockville site is most selective compared to other RMSC sites (Germantown/Olney/MLK/KSAC).

Ah - good point. KSAC is right up there, from my understanding. And probably the others are still more selective than other programs again, due to space.

Anonymous wrote:Depends on the age group. 9-10s last year swam all four strokes, sprinted a timed 25Y free, and did a few exercises with kickboards. I don't know how much distance was covered, but they were in the water for about 20 minutes. 8Us several years ago swam all 4 strokes and that was pretty much it, although even in that age group there was some attention paid to endurance (meaning more than one lap of free and back in a row). They were in the water or on deck for about 30 minutes. Coaches have names, make lists, and take notes. Some sites have a meeting for parents during the tryout time while the kids are in the water. You can request feedback (not justification, of course, but rather observations) if your DC does not get in by emailing the site coordinator.

We went to Olney and my friend’s kid went to KSAC. We compared notes and the tryout was very different. The same friend went to Rockville and it was more vigorous.

Rockville is seriously competitive.

Based on what?

How are you determining this?

Just look at the minimum group standards for each site; that makes it clear enough, especially since minimum standards aren't typically sufficient to get in.

I know other sites expect much more than the minimum standards. Competition would be based on how many try out, vs how many spots offered, not a few descriptive sentences on the website.

Absolutely true. However, even the Rockville _standards_ are written up differently than the ones for the other sites. Plus there has been speculation that more people may try out for "anything other than KSAC" given the crazy-quilt practice schedule and location-hopping that KSAC will have to undertake for the immediate future during the renovations. That might make slots at other sites even harder to get.

That being said registration is still open for Rockville Monday tryout. Surprised that it’s not full at this point.

Both dates are full now. All the best to the swimmers trying out next week!
