Would you ask your employee this if you didn't plan to manage him/her out?

I would proactively schedule a mid-cycle informal review. If you want this job and your manager can't be trusted to give you the feedback (sounds like he/she can't) then you need to be proactive. Schedule a meeting, come prepared with things you think you're doing well and what you are working on (not what you aren't doing or doing well but what you are 'working' on) and ask he/she to do the same.

If after that you receive feedback that is a surprise, you need to go to HR. That of course is if you want this job and want to stay with the company. A manager like this is often an indicator of poor management within the company, unfortunately. Not always of course. Do you give upward reviews on your boss? Because this is a great piece of feedback to give to them!
