Adults at the pool — laps only?

At our pool adults go in to cool off. Today was relatively empty but at adult swim there were three of us swimmmng laps and about a dozen others also in the water lounging or chatting. Usually there are at least a handful of parents playing with kid ms. Yes, the kids rule the place, but there are plenty of adults in the wstet

Plenty of adults in the water at the same time as kids. Adults are shooting basketballs, chatting, drinking, going off the dive, doing laps...

We have one lap lane. If someone isn't doing laps then people can play in it. They clear it if someone wants to do laps. You can reserve the lap lane online.

There is a break at quarter to the hour, every hour. Anyone under 16 has to get out of the pool for 15 minutes.

I sometimes play with my kids, I sometimes walk around or half-swim while they swim, I sometimes swim laps during adult swim, I sometimes let my kids play while I sit out. What I don’t do is stare at other adults and wonder why they don’t do exactly what I do at the pool.

We belong to two pools for reasons that aren't worth explaining. The first one we joined turned out to be a place where adults just don't swim, and it really disappointed me as a swimmer. The second pool is my preferred one and where I've met lots of people and feel most comfortable. It also happens to be the one that always has one lane line in for lap swim and depending on the hour, will have up to 3 lap lanes even in the middle of a summer day. Having the lap lanes somehow gives adults "permission" to use all parts of the pool, and I don't think I've ever been to open swim and not seen an adult just swimming around for fun.
