I don’t think you need to keep out of it. Just keep out of the decision and be happy for him with whatever he decides. if you are a gift giving person, get him a fun new car gift when he gets his next vehicle.

He is an adult, and can spend his money as he wishes.

You don’t know how long he will live.

As an aside, can people not be allowed to drive when they reach a certain age? Maybe 80 or 85. Maybe 90. Whatever is reasonable. For the safety of us all.

+1. He should get the nicest car he wants and can afford

It's great that he can still drive and has the money to buy a new car. He should get what he can afford and wants. A dependable, safe car that he can enjoy!

“Allow” it?

Totally agree. My parents just replaced their car. They don’t drive far and no longer take road trips, but I’m glad they have a nice car with the latest safety features. If and when something happens and they don’t drive anymore, they or us kids can sell the car.

Need a car with the all the safety automation gizmos

As long as he's still safe with his driving, a new car has the advantage of having the latest safety features (as others have pointed out).

This is so irresponsible and dangerous. 84 year olds shouldn't be driving. This is how we end up with cars crashing through pedestrians or into buildings/homes.

At least make him take and pass a real driving test before buying a vehicle.

Put Uber on his phone before he kills someone. Do you really want this on your conscience?

My stepfather bought a new car at 88. We all disapproved as he shouldn’t be driving but he’s stubborn. It’s four years old and has less than 10,000 miles.

Do you think 16 year olds should be driving? They have far riskier behaviors and are more dangerous.

Oh, please. By this logic, no one aged 16-24 should be allowed to drive because they have the highest accident involvement rates (percent of all crashes to the percent of licensed drivers). The rate is 2.4 for 16-20 year olds, 1.7 for 21-24 year olds and .4 for those 75 or older. At 1.3, the rate for 25-34 year olds is three time higher than those who are 75+. Maybe you should only be allowed to drive once you qualify for Medicare.
