Pickleball people

Is it like pick-up basketball where I just show up and call next game or do I need to get into a group and reserve a time?

Young bucks should take the hint and play tennis, a real sport, while their bodies will allow them. Pickleball was specifically created for old people. Young people are attracted to it because it's easy and social. Tennis is social too, but it's much more challenging and much more rewarding.

This is a good thing! Two things so many people can use right now—exercise and social time. And I’ll add a third plus—healthy intergenerational contact. America needs pickleball right now in so many ways. I don’t know why you feel the need to knock it. Let people have their fun.

Tell her to loudly say, “I DON’T KNOW YOU; PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE. YOU ARE MAKING ME UNCOMFORTABLE.” Then watch them skitter like roaches.

but often times the old and the young are playing two different "brands" of pickleball, hence the conflict.

Pickleball is one of the very few sports where you can get better in your 40s and 50s. I can't really think of any other. There's some kind of grading or level system that I don't really understand, but pickleball people take it very seriously. So pickleball attracts very competitive middle aged people. And there's a system that measures their ranking in the pickleball universe. And that comes with status in their world. It's like its own subculture for hyper-competitive older people.

But the sport is basically ping pong with a couple of extra steps.

Not sure we have the whole story here. Are the girls trying to play with other people during reserved time? Yes, there are a wide range of people in the pickleball community, but it can get pretty exhausting to be regularly relied on to teach beginners the game when you have 60 minutes to try to get in some competitive games yourself. Not all times are appropriate for beginners to join. And, some court times are reserved for for specific age groups. Think about the welcome your kids would get if they showed up at a regular pick-up basketball court having never played the game - do you think they would be welcomed and encouraged to join teh game with roses and sweetness?

You do not need to reserve a time, just wait your turn. The worst time someone was rude was not when the courts were busy at all. They have gone at various times of day.
