Do UMC parents buy their adult kid a car after college?

My parents gave me their car when they upgraded.

A point to consider...insurance is horrible for young people, city dwellers in edgy, hip neighborhoods, etc. Don't buy someone a car that will cost them a small fortune to insure and repair.

UMC parents buy their kids everything. College Grad school. Wedding. Down payment on a house. Vacations.

I have no problems with it -- it's better for the family if the kids aren't forced to pay interest to someone else, are able to take advantage of the market, and enjoy life.

Avg new car sale is $47k (!!!) at the moment. And used comes with risks like maintenance, lack of free loaner car if in for service. Even things like worrying about tires and brakes on a used car is a chore and a safety risk.

I am sure I will.

This is a big reason that we gave our DS the car that my husband had been driving (and he got a new car). We had made repairs and kept up the car very well. My son drove it for many more miles.

normal is whatever is normal for you. My twins share a car. It is paid off. If one of them wants it, they can have it. If neither wants it, maybe one can trade it in and get something else. My DH's car is also paid off, he could use an upgrade so maybe we given the other kid that car. Not sure, but I certainly don't need three cars for the two of us, so I will be happy to help when the time comes.

I’m helping my son buy a car when he’s a senior in college so he can get himself to interviews. Assuming they do in person interviews anymore…

I have never had a car this expensive in my life. Nobody needs a brand new 47k car, and most people never have them. There's room between a constantly breaking down 20 year-old car and one that's a few years old. The loaner thing is not a reason to spend 30k more.

No our kids ended up in dense urban areas like NYC, London and Paris and didn't require cars. They use a car service

I don't see my kids settling anywhere that they would want a car. Honestly, the only reason we have a car was to shuttle the kids to their activities and take road trips. Now that is almost at an end.

We may seriously consider ditching our car and just using Ubers and metro and renting for road trips (though I suspect we will just drive it into the ground).

DP here. Correct, but the group this thread is discussing is UMC. I'm guessing that they're paying the average new car sale price... We're the rare family in our UMC neighborhood who still drives their old basic sedans from years ago. Everyone else has more expensive vehicles, and a few have luxury vehicles.

I am UMC as well. Many people in my neighborhood have older/cheaper cars.

Most popular car for the yuppy demo is probably the Tesla Model Y, which isn’t exactly a flashy car. Those are mid 40s to mid 50s, so $47k isn’t an astronomical sum on a new car anymore.
