Do UMC parents buy their adult kid a car after college?

+100 Mine is heading to NYC. No car is needed. We will furnish the apartment instead.

All those posh apartment buildings in Brooklyn have garages.

Yeah…so do Manhattan buildings but few people without kids are paying $1000+ per month to garage a car that gets used almost never. Also, most of those garages are for people parking overnight that don’t even live in the building.

It's not any better, if that was the point of the post!

I wasn’t trying for optics. I was stating a fact. No car needed. However, Furniture IS needed. So that’s where $$ will go.

Wow, what a bubble you live in. I have never lived anywhere in my adult life without a car, and neither have most people I know.

Folks...this is DCUM so guess what...we live in DC and our kids tend to work and live in DC, Boston, NYC, SFO and other cities where a young adult doesn't need or want a car.

I get that many people on the site are very suburban or live in anywhere US...but you can't come to a site with DC in the title and claim we live in "a bubble".

Most of the affluent 20-somethings working in DC have a car.

No they don’t…some do, but most don’t. Why make s**t up because you know one person that lives in downtown DC and owns a car.

+1 some of these posters are ridiculous. Biglaw associates are the definition of affluent 20 somethings and very few have cars. Why would you? Uber everywhere for going out, Zipcar when needed, fly to vacations, etc. We didn't have a car until we moved to to suburbs and had kids.

Yes my parents bought me a car. It was an average car that was 2 years old (like a Camry). I actually think that was one of the top things that gave me a leg up. All my peers had $500+ a month car loans immediately that I didn’t have. One even had an $850 one!

The alternative is that you drive a junker. Dh had a $1500 car that he fixed every week until he could afford better.

we have multiple kids and have had to buy multiple cars at various times. What we do has no bearing on what anyone else “should “ do.

my kid goes to GW and brought his car. He’s definitely not the only one. Doubt if he get a job in DC he will suddenly give it ip.

They are getting hand me down cars in HS. If they want a new car when they graduate college, they can buy it.

Anonymous
Yes for sure. My parents did it for me and I will do it for my kids!! I have the money and it won’t affect me. If it will benefit my child more for them to buy it themselves then we will do that. But if you’re asking if it’s the norm for UMC/UC parents yes it is. Those saying otherwise aren’t that.

If you can afford it then give a new car with all the latest safety features to your kid.

Less than 5% of GW students have cars and that includes all the super wealthy international sons and daughters.

My kid goes to Penn and knows a kid with a car because the kid is ROTC and needs to travel one weekend per month to a military base in the middle of nowhere PA. Renting a car vs paying for the monthly garage was a wash.

So…again…some people have cars.

Is your kid paying for parking, insurance, gas, maintenance? I assume the answer is no as a UMC college student.

Why would he not if it is entirely free? I don’t think any of this discussion is buy your kid a car and allow them to operate it at zero cost to them forever.

If he gets a job and is now going to have to pay for all that himself and barely uses it…I assume he will drive it home and leave it with you.

Who would want a car in NYC? You cannot use it. if you take it out, you have to pay to park wherever you are going, so you sit in traffic for 30 mins and pay $40-50 to park it. It's easier and cheaper to uber both ways.

And after the $500+/month to pay to park, you also can add $500/month for insurance. Much easier to just rent a vehicle when you want to drive somewhere outside the city for a vacation or such

And you seem to live in YOUR own bubble. Can you not imagine a living situation where a car is more trouble than it is worth? I would say about half of my younger coworkers have cars. My own kid is 18 and rarely needs a car - he typically takes transit or short cab/Uber/Lyft rides. Spouse and I have shared 1 car for years... and we live in Arlington. If we lived in the city, we probably wouldn't even have that.

We bought it when they were in HS.

Not to mention the tolls are like $20 just to cross the bridge.
