| Look at taxes. Moving from Massachusetts we picked VA because of income taxes. |
It washes out w/ car taxes frankly, unless you own only one car or only own very old clunkers. Maybe at very high incomes it's better, but for us it's a wash with a 2010 sedan and 2016 SUV. |
| Burke is the up and coming neighborhood in VA that has a good vibe, good schools and diversity. |
| I don't think you are priced out of Arlington. Look closer to Rt. 50. There are options. |
| Occasionally houses like this pop up in South Arlington. But if you're looking for a new-ish build, that's probably going to be at or more than your budget. |
| We have all that in Rockville and it is more diverse than other MD options suggested. |
| Takoma Park |
I appreciate your condolences. -Someone who lives in Silver Spring 20910 and loves it. |
Can extend that out to areas zoned for Irving MS/West Springfield HS, Frost MS/Woodson HS. That whole area has very similar schools and home prices. Slightly more expensive in the Woodson HS area, but well within OPs budget. |
| Idk why the commenter said that recommending Rockville is bleak. Rockville is a great, safe (I leave my door unlocked) place to live and raise a family. Schools are great. With all the shops you can ever need and not terrible traffic |
Shhhhh don't tell them. We live in a DCUM hellhole. |
I live near Burke and like it relative to many of the local suburbs, but there is nothing up and coming about it. |
| Columbia or Howard County/Ellicott City |
It's a fine suburb. A hard transition for someone who is used to and enjoys urban living and not having to drive everywhere. As are all the other recommendations here. |
| Kensington and Rockville. I knew the rest of you want to keep this quiet. |
