Has anybody found a good watermelon yet this season?

Yes. I've had three and all have been sweet and crisp. I learned the secret to choosing sweet watermelon from Willard Scott when he was on the Today show. Here it is:

Take a strand of real straw (hardware store in my area carries straw brooms. The fake straw won't work) and lay it on melon and if the straw starts moving in a circle then its sweet. This method has never failed and I've been using it for years. Obviously, you need to put melon on a flat surface.

What? Is this really a thing?

Nope but had really good cantaloupes from Costco, 3 times in a row, so 6 cantaloupes

Same here. Plums and watermelons have been watery, Georgia peaches delicious.

I bought 4 red plums from Wegmans (Fairfax) yesterday. All gone now, and wishing I had bought the whole lot. Best plums I have had in a very long while. For reasons I don't understand, Wegmans consistantly has better tasting fruits than other stores. I buy grapes exclusively from them now.

OP here. Wow! Thanks for the great advice!

Do you know how to properly pick watermelons?

Yes. Surprisingly. I bought 2 from Giant in the last 2 weeks and they were so sweet.

We've been buying them from Trader Joe's. Have bought like 4 so far this season and they have been great! We get the round ones, about bowling ball size. The heavier the better tasting.

I guess I am the lone sufferer who has the same experience. I am in California and even the already cut up watermelon is pale and watery. If the produce people can’t choose a watermelon, what chance do I have?

We had a really good one from Wegmans last week.
