What brought you to DCUM?

Joined the list-serve when my first child was an infant in 2002 I think. So, almost 21 years ago....gulp!

I was pregnant in 2001 and researching daycares. Found the email list on a google search and have been here ever since! I browse recent topics, usually, rather than specific forums.

Soccer! - I grew up in Vienna and moved around the country for my wife's career. My daughter is now a very competitive soccer player in the Philadelphia area and this is the best resource for youth soccer info for the DMV region.

I don’t remember exactly, but it was related to DC because I’m not from the area but was going to be spending a month there. Then I stayed for entertainment, and sometimes I get or give good information.

Infertility and then special needs. Now I just read recent. Also find travel helpful!

I stumbled on it at some point when my kids were little. My first post I asked for advice about a move in the fall and whether or not I should have my 3yo start preschool here in this area in September, given we were moving just a month later.

I got horrible advice. I was called a bunch of names and told I was an awful parent. I nearly took it seriously and thankfully the directors at both schools talked me off the ledge. Ds started preschool here and then went to the new school after we moved and everything worked out great, just like both directors said it would.

It was a major lesson about how seriously to take advice here (not!) and that I’d need a thick skin if I were to hang out on DCUM. I read and I post, but I don’t ask for any real advice here ever, aside from maybe a restaurant recommendation.

The John Mulaney thread - if you know you know

18 year ago, when I was first pregnant, I went to a store in Gaithersburg for baby furniture (great expectations?) and they suggested it.

Summer 2015 reading about the Kane Show on-air debacle - memories!

I was going through an issue with my MIL and looked to Google for advice. I found it here and never left.

Moved here from out of state and was googling the name of the neighborhood we were looking at. I realized immediately this place was a cesspool.

DW kept telling me hilarious stories about all the whacked-out, toxic, neurotic, nutjobs on some site called DCUM, so I had to check it out. I drop in every six months or so to marvel at the freak show until the novelty wears off again and I'm good for another half year. I usually go to OT or Feedback, and occasionally one of the parenting forums when DW tells me about someone being especially ridiculous. I used to look at the politics page, but the right wing scum on there are too ugly and awful for even me to be entertained.

I first came across it when I was researching local daycare/nanny share options or something along that line in 2014. I started out mostly reading the baby/parenting forums but my current favorites are money & finance, family relationships, and travel.

I was Googling about the awful Savopoulos crime and ended up here, in a thread titled something innocuous, such as a 'fire in Upper NW' (or something like that).

I noticed some other threads and topics and have been here ever since!

Ah, I remember that thread. Yes, the initial news was about a fire and then it turned into something so much larger. And worse.
