well someone asked about boys schools and landon is clearly one of the best known schools in this area. I'm sure the Landon parents, alumni and students would like to shut down any discussion of its reputation but free speech is still alive and well in this country. And of course, it's not just the UVA murder. It's the fact that the school is at the root of so many public displays of unethical behavior. |
Re College Matriculation at Landon
2010 Class-84 students Northwestern - 2 Univ of Chicago - 2 UNC- Chapel Hill - 2 Uva - 6 BC - 2 Cornell - 3 Princeton -2 Penn - 1 Dartmouth - 1 Georgetown - 2 Stanford - 3 Colgate - 2 Middlebury - 2 Davdison - 4 Trinity - 3 wash univ st louis - 1 Out of a class 0f 84 boys, I think this is pretty good for getting in to top schools. Here is the link to the matriculation list: http://www.landon.net/uploaded/documents/academics/College_Counseling/matriculation_2010_080410.pdf |
Wow PP. I didn't think Landon's list would be the powerful. From the shortlist which you gave that totals up to 38 boys heading on to very fine schools which is 45% of the class. By the way, you forgot a Carnegie Melon kid so it brings it up to 39 out of 84 which is a solid 46% of the class heading on to elite schools. Then they're a bunch of Georgetown University, UNC, and even Kenyon commitments. |
You might want to check out the list given by one of the PPs. I don't think they sent a "small, top percentile of its students." 46% of a graduating class going on to such an impressive list of colleges is pretty impressive. I am no Landon booster, but i've seen their college acceptance lists or atleast heard about it since I have a couple of Landon parents as friends and year in and year out, they seem to put a good percentage of kids into top tier universities. Now I just don't know whether it's through their top academic merit or whether they're a impressive athlete. I would suppose both. |
Hmm...at last check Sidwell was still coed so really not relevant to this thread. |
Um that list is a bit varied. I'm not hung up on Ivies, but I count 10 Ivies (plus Stanford). I'd say that colleges like BC and Davidson are top schools, but in different ways. The stats are not 45% go to the top schools, as it all depends on how you count "top." No one to Harvard, Yale or Brown. And out of those 10 going to Ivies, how many were recruited athletes?
Christian Webster went to Harvard a few years ago from landon as a recruited basketball player. He is a great kid, but it is basketball that brought him to Harvard, not Landon. I think you'll find a huge chunk of those at the Ivies, along with Duke, UVA, Middlebury, Georgetown, are also athletes. Probably not Carnegie Mellon or Chicago though. |
frankly the athlete/legacy thing is true for every school, not just Landon. A Sidwell parent was telling me that the kids who got into ivies from this years class were athletes and legacies too. |
I am not afficilated with Landon but I am posting to set the record straight: whether or not anyone from Landon's class of 2010 will matriculate at Harvard (I don't know), TWO members of that class were admitted to Harvard this spring. |
To the OP: Look Landon is a great school and don't fall into this media news too much because it could happen at any school. It is unfortunate that it has happened continuously to Landon grads, but I find it complete rubbish to blame a school for a grad's misdoing. For those who are going to say,"what a about the freshmen boy sex scandal?" Well... I have a good answer for those parents who are shocked, open your eyes and you might want to go behind the scenes of your "innocent" children. Believe me, children happen to know and do more things than we actually know about. I am no Landon booster, my DS goes to one of the "Big 3" but trust me, it could happen at even my DS's school. |
I'm not a Landon parent or a booster, but I think people are ridiculous who try to diminish it. Look folks -- for any school -- if you subtract legacy, urm, athletic admissions to any college list -- you're going to be left pretty dry. It's not just Landon. |
NP here. Landon is a great school, in all departments really. But it just simply doesn't stack up to St. Albans or Sidwell in terms of college placement. That's just a fact. |

Here is the list from St Albans for the last 5 years. Since they don't give a specific list for the 2010 grad class, it is hard to compare to Landon for a specific year but the list looks pretty similar save Harvard, Yale and Brown. These have never big big schools for Landon and these may be big legacy schools for St. Albans. Without knowing the numbers of students who go, hard to compare. As far as Sidwell, no college matriculation list exists on their website so not sure how we can compare without a list. |
Landon is a great school academically and athletically. Dont forget, they also have a great arts program. Their band and strings teams are top notch. The best thing Landon does to its students is it forces the students to take up art, drama or music. as a graduation requirement. It amazes me, how many kids on their athletic teams play in the school band or sing in the chorus. |
Found this video on comcast sports net today about a current Landon student. Interesting to note, the Washington Post failed to mention anything about this accomplished young student. Landon is a great school, and its current students, parents and alums should be very proud of this young man's accomplishments. see the link below.

Great for the student. Barf on the poster. Why would expect the Post to write about this kid? There are thousands of accomplished kids throughout this area. |
