Board of Education finds way to tax students

Can someone explain what exactly is being proposed? Are people saying they would charge a computer fee to be able to use a Chromebook?

No not really, but they can make up things to get people worked up over nothing.

OK, classic Parents' Coalition then. I kind of *want* MCPS to charge a computer fee so I can refuse to pay and have my kids not use Chromebooks. Too bad.

Classic MCPS PR office response.

Why don't you explain why the use of student activity funds is listed in a board resolution? Get all your fart/martian words out and explain why those funds are in that resolution.

Because schools can, and always have been able to, use that money for extra technology for students if they want to.

Try again. This is about a Board of Education resolution to use $10 million dollars of student funds to pay for a contract. This has nothing to do with individual schools. This isn't a choice, it's a must. Students wouldn't have a choice, their money would be taken from them.

You cannot read. It does not say that at all. It lists all of the possible sources of purchase of technology from this vendor. You are crazy. And dumb.

Good name calling but you still haven't explained how student funds would be used to pay for this contract.
It's a contract. Payment would be due. How are you going to force students to pay for whatever this is? Explain. Use as many insults as you want, but explain how you are going to force students to pay on this contract.

You really have a reading problem. Let's use easy numbers for you since big numbers seem to be hard for you to understand (along with reading)

Let's pretend the contract is for $1,000 and not $30M. So we are under contract to pay the vendor $1000
$500 will come from CIP to pay them
$100 will come from grants to pay them
That leaves $400 which will come out of operating budget OR IAF if a school chooses to buy something for their school.

Let's say Bethesda ES wants to buy a 3D printer that costs $100 and they buy it through this vendor. They can use IAF money since it's for their own individual school and that $100 counts towards the contract expenditure total. So now only $300 will come out of operating budget.

If no schools want to use IAF to buy extra technology from that vendor, no problem then all $400 will come out of operating budget because it's been identified to use.

No where in the resolution does it even say the words fee, Chromebook, or transfer.

Why are you so afraid of using the real numbers? It's millions of dollars on the line. And in your imaginary explanation the BOE is committing to spending $10 million on what? On something that schools don't want?

The BOE commits to giving this company $10 million even if nothing is purchased? Great plan.

And which student fees are going to be used to pay for this contract? Prom? Football? Drama? Yearbook?

Are 22:52 and 23:04 arguing with one another? It sort of seems like they are insulating one another but ultimately both seem to be saying the Parents’ Coalition is misrepresenting the matter. Does anyone agree with the PC? I really can’t follow their post.

Isn't the Board of Education resolution self explanatory?

22:52 is Parents Coalition and as usual they have no idea what they are talking about.

Not to someone who isn’t immersed in budget issues.

But isn’t the PC saying that students will have to pay fees next year? From the OP: “Next year the board will be collecting fees from students and using that money to fund the operating budget.”

Whereas 22:52 is saying you can’t force students to pay fees: “you still haven't explained how student funds would be used to pay for this contract.
It's a contract. Payment would be due. How are you going to force students to pay for whatever this is?”

If it is the PC they are not making a good argument.
