2033 Girls - try out for NL or MCE?

Anonymous
I dk about the post above saying they’ve disbanded hs teams, but I do know they just posted their 2026 team went 4-0 this past weekend. That seems like an odd combo.
Also, I can speak firsthand that several years ago a coach from MC openly told NL parents that NL was disbanding their program altogether. Just call or email directors.

Just looked up the NL 2026 team and they played tournaments last weekend and this weekend. Not sure how that’s consistent with this claim that NL disbanded their HS teams.

Many Moco girls are headinh over American Legion bridge these days to St. James (Stars) program. Extremely organized and well run. Good Coaches too.

Do Stars have a 2033 team? It doesn't appear that there were Stars teams in the NGLL for either the 2033s or the 2032s. The three teams listed above do play in the NGLL at these ages, though MC Elite loses badly in every age bracket including 2033.

Stars may have teams that young, but they don’t compete in the NGLL until possibly 5th grade? I’d double check and ask someone who is already with Stars, but I know they do hold off putting teams in the NGLL until a certain age and just do practices and tournaments until then.

I would definitely stay away from MCE. If your DD loves lax and wants to grow in the sport, MCE is not worth your time. It’s true that 3-Step (parent company of M&D) just bought NL, so it may be a good option. Pride may be worth looking into if you want more options. Their teams play in the NGLL, but one downside is their club fees are probably the highest of all the clubs

They also played in the 15th out of 16 pools in 2026 age group. So, maybe not disbanded fully but definitely not competitive.

My daughter is a 2027 and has always played MCE, made varsity as a freshmen. Girls played great at LLL. BTW, she did not even tryout for Capital.

Pride and stars are both good options for those living in VA however if original poster is choosing between MCE and NL, unsure any 4th grade team is worth commuting over the bridge for.

At $3k per year, basic expectations of coaches showing up and team providing responsive day to day management need to be met. Per above messages, talk to clubs directly as well as parents on those teams to learn more.

Scores do not matter, it is about getting better and having fun and all of the local clubs can provide this. Look where the best high school players played and where the best coaches are. It is not NL, becoming M&D is not going to change anything.

For a rising 4th grader, I’d say the opposite. Get on a team with coaches that know how to develop players.

Really not clear if NL is going to improve with MnD collaboration.

MCE has its issues as noted above. It’s not clear how or if they plan to make improvements.

DC area is quickly becoming a disappointment for girls lax community.

Already seeing some impact from M&D with first look tryout added for 6/19 to get the jump on BLC’s 6/20 tryout, and coaching assignments being dropped on Instagram.

Agree that overall outlook is TBD, but this is primarily a discussion of 33 tryouts and MCE vs NL. As previous posters noted, a very obvious choice for any MD / NW DC player not on BLC Blue. And like most tryout cycles, would expect to even see 1-2 BLC Blue players come out for M&D…

Did you mean “well, run!”? Because you should run from stars. It is the opposite of well run. They can’t even seem to get teams registered for tournaments correctly.

Anyone getting offers yet? Pretty busy try-out last night.

BLC 2033 team will be hard to break into .. likely the best around and the coaching staff is incredible not only for pure success but really focusing on development. If you can squeak in there that would be your best bet.

BLC and Pride farm great teams and have historically been very competitive in the top 20 national rankings.
