This was announced at graduation on Friday. |
Nothing against Maryland, but do such students confine themselves to a mid state school on the Green Line? |
| Best way to stand out is to move to DC and send your kid to DCPS. |
Ummm, UMD is a great school and a great value. No one is confining themselves by going there. |
+100 Exactly! It’s the secret sauce. |
People think getting an education in a "good school district" is key but it doesn't matter how good your education is if you are surrounded by these types of personalities. DCPS and private school grads are faring better in admissions because this. |
+1 Truth! Admission rates for UMD should not be this cutthroat. |
Why take on debt? If you can go to a state school and graduate without debt you are in better life position then a top tier school with $100k debt and growing interest |
People who go to "good school districts" understand how deeply beneficial it is to be surrounded by "these types of personalities", which I'm assuming is a euphemism for "hard-working Asian kids who are going to be very successful in life". In fact, it is more beneficial than having a slightly higher chance of getting into a better school. Anyways, a better school is going to knock anyone who is unprepared for academic rigor on their ass. |
Why shouldn't it be? There aren't enough spots for high stats students in T20, and outside of a handful of T20, most aren't worth $80K+ per year. Makes total sense that state flagships are becoming more and more difficult to get into. |
Everyone has their own strategy for success. Same goes for anyone who wants to move to DCPS and "stand out". If a kid has a 4.5 on a 5.0 scale but can't even score a 4 on an AP, that's a warning flag. But if you look at Wooton's HS profile, it's a non-issue. Most of the kids are achieving 4's and 5's (e.g. walk-the-talk). Now, can you say that about every MCPS HS? So whatever your own strategy is, I wouldn't sweat it too much. |
It's not a surprise they are. OOS students are excellent revenue sources, and UMD (and all state universities) can't accept all of their students from a few counties and a couple dozen high schools. Last year, according to MoCo360, UMD still accepted 200+ students from Wootton. |
Yes! 93% of UMD's entering class had over a 4.0! Kids today are just brilliant, but back when I was in school maybe 5% of my class had over a 3.5. |
Nonesne, APs are also much easier and inflated these days, just like grades. |
Exactly! |
