How bad is it really if my kid only takes 3 years of a language

I just attended a college symposium with several top schools and only 2 Ivys required 4 years. Everyone else was fine with 3 as long as the replacement was rigorous.

Can you say which 2 Ivies?

If I remember correctly Harvard and
Princeton. Stanford and Penn were there too. Their websites would confirm.

OP here DCUM you are AWESOME. I'm going to do a deep dive into the schools in which he is interested (Tufts, Wash U being two top ones) and investigate. Thank you for walking me back from the ledge!!!

And when was this?

My kid only had three years (and one was in 8th grade). He ED'ed to a top-50 LAC, which requires that *everyone* take 2 semesters of a foreign language while there.

Can he take a foreign language this summer at a community college?

I am not sure about admission, but Tulane has a language requirement for graduation. So if you don’t have AP credit from high school you will be taking language at college. My DC did 4 years in high school of Spanish, but didn’t get accepted to AP senior year (due to a B+ in Spanish junior year) so is stuck taking 2 semesters at college.

I'm freaking out bc DS doesn't have room in his senior schedule to take a fourth year of language. He is really into history and government and wants to do a couple of AP classes in that realm, he is in a DCPS so he has to take DC History and do a senior project. I'm very worried that he will get nixed right off of the bat from a bunch of schools. Does anyone else have any advice? Have not gone to guidance counselor yet.
Thank you!

What are your target schools? Be realistic. It might matter to a very few schools. Kids from TJ routinely stop after 3 years of language to focus on what they want to focus on and have no problems getting into top schools. One kid showed continued commitment to the language by staying engaged with a language club (be became an officer) and got into Stanford based on his academic strengths. He had stopped after 3 years. Mine stopped after sophomore year (+1 years in MS) and got into UT Austin, Michigan, UVA, Florida, UIUC and a whole slew of lower ranked schools). If it works for that school, I don't see why it won't work for everyone else. Don't sweat it.

I assume you are at Walls since your child has a senior project.

Wash U likes Walls - especially if you apply ED.
Explain not taking a 4th year of language in the other info section of the common app (Optional Essay).
My DS stated that he had a schedule conflict for Latin and an AP class and selected the AP class as he wanted to get a deeper sense of the content before college as it was an area of interest. Write it fact based - not excuse based.
I think my DS had a header like: 12th Grade Course Selection

My DC from a DCPS had 3 years of language in HS - heading to Macalester in the fall.

I don’t know. My in state kid with only three years was rejected at UVA but our OOS friend was accepted UVA with only three.

Unless you graduated anytime from ‘22 onward, this information is worthless.
