Should a swimmer do IAS (NVSL) and NCSA Summer Champs

You don’t, not every club does summer NCSAs. But no one is using their SCM times from summer swim for college, so if there are times/cuts you are trying to achieve you are not going to prioritize a summer swim meet over an elite club meet, whether it’s NCSAs or something else.

No one is saying to ditch all your club meets for summer league meets. People are just saying it’s possible to have your cake and eat it too

It’s not possible to have your cake and eat it too in the OPs circumstances though, where this year’s NCSAs are during the same weekend as All Stars.

And people wonder why we have so few Olympic Trials qualifiers in this area.

How is the number of trials qualifiers related to summer league at all?

Not really, especially with older swimmers. That's why divisional times are usually faster.

And why for some of the 15 and older events you will have 10-15 qualifiers scratch from all-stars because they are going to these big meets. Alternates have a great chance of getting in the older the age group events. The qualifiers still get their patches (even if they scratch) and get to swim in the meet that really matters for college recruiting. Win/win.

Or if they already have the times they are looking for this season, skip the travel and have fun with their rec team.

Both in one week with the travel is a lot. These kids are great athletes, but not machines.

Agreed, depends on age and goals.

If they are truly doable on the calendar and kid really wants to, fine, do both. Who cares if NVSL meet isn't awesome performance coming off the big meet? But don't compromise the big meet for a younger swimmer with recruiting goals by cutting the meet short, etc.

My committed senior and most teammates are not doing a travel meet this summer in favor of their all star meet (and a less crazy summer before their new gig).

There is not one magic meet that matters for college recruiting.

Correct, but there is a meet that has an absolute 0 chance of mattering for college recruiting and that is Summer League All-Stars

Because given there are many people in this area that truly believe a rec swim league is just as important as Long Course Season is for our highest level swimmers, then summer league is definitely way more important than long course season at the younger level and because of that those kids will never care about long course and therefore it’ll be absolutely impossible to get a Trials Cut if you never care about long course.

But you could post fast times for college at other lc meets that are not the same weekend as all stars. It’s not complicated.

You know this is a crazy concept, but it’s possible to care about both

It’s also not complicated that elite swimmers will prioritize club meets over rec league all stars.

Then they need to wake up and be realistic.
